THE MATCHUP—The Longhorns head to Manhattan, Kan., for their first Big 12 Conference road series of the season…Texas enters the weekend with a 5-1 record in Big 12 play while Kansas is 0-3 in league action after last weekend’s sweep at the hands of TCU.


A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS—K-State is coming off a 3-0 midweek win over Omaha at home in Tointon Stadium…the Wildcats previously were swept in their Big 12 Conference opening series against TCU on the road in Fort Worth…Kansas State is led by sophomore outfielder Will Brennan and his .404/.463/.505 line for the season…junior transfer Drew Mount has made a splash so far this season, hitting 7 homers and driving in 31 runs while amassing 17 steals for the year…as a team, K-State is 51-of-56 in stolen base attempts. 


A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—Texas has won 7-of-8 since its five-game losing skid…the Longhorns won their first two Big 12 Conference series, sweeping Kansas and taking 2-of-3 from Oklahoma State at home last weekend…on Tuesday night, the Longhorns defeated Texas State on the road by a 6-1 final…that game saw sophomore shortstop David Hamilton crank his first career homer…Kody Clemens continues to pace the offense, hitting at a .352/.469/.681 line to go along with a team-high seven homers and 21 walks…on the mound, Nolan Kingham’s return to form as staff ace has lowered his ERA to 3.67.


NEXT UP—Texas plays two midweek games next week, on Monday at home against McNeese State and on Tuesday night at TAMU-CC at Whataburger Field, before returning home for a Big 12 Conference series against Baylor on Friday.


KINGHAM CROWNED—Junior RHP Nolan Kingham was named Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday…Kingham started the week with a save on last Tuesday night thanks to a perfect 9th inning against then-No. 25 Sam Houston State…he returned to the hill on Saturday and went 8 innings, scattering 7 hits and no walks while striking out 5 for his 4th win of the year…it is Kingham’s second weekly honor of the year, but the first from the conference…he was named Perfect Game/Rawlings National Pitcher of the Week following his opening night start against Louisiana.


GO DJ, THAT’S MY DJ—After the first five attempted stolen bases against him were successful, junior catcher DJ Petrinsky has caught 7-of-10 since, improving his caught stealing percentage to 46.7 for the season.


CAN’T STOP CLEMENS—Clemens went 0-for-5 on Tuesday night, snapping his 26-game reached base streak and his nine-game hitting streak, but the junior has opened the 2018 campaign on a tear…he began 2018 with a 13-game hit streak, the longest for a Longhorn since Madison Carter’s 15-game streak in 2014…Clemens has amassed 21 walks to 17 Ks on the season, is 3-for-3 in stolen bases, and holds a team-best 1.150 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage)…he hit his 7th homer of the year last Sunday vs. Oklahoma State, a new career-high after hitting 5 in 54 games last season…his .681 slugging percentage leads the Big 12 Conference…he leads the team in HR (7), average (.52),  walks (21), and on-base percentage (.469).


D-HAM GOES DEEP—SS David Hamilton hit his first career homer on Tuesday, coming in his hometown of San Marcos.


HIT ME—On Tuesday night at Texas State, leadoff hitter Tate Shaw went 0-for-1 but reached base safely four times, including three HBPs…no Longhorn had been hit with a pitch three times in a game since Ben Johnson on May 1, 2015.


ZUUUBIA—Redshirt-freshman and designated hitter Zach Zubia has reached base safely in each of the last 25 games in his rookie campaign…over the weekend, he hit his fifth homer on Friday night and has walked twice in each of his next three games…he drew a bases-loaded walk on Tuesday night to take over the team lead in RBI with 25.


PRESEASON POLL—In the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll, Texas was selected to finish third behind preseason favorite Texas Tech (61) and TCU (60)…last season, seven of the nine Big 12 teams made the NCAA postseason.
