WAY-TOO-EARLY COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOP 25

23. Texas

2019 record: 8-5, 5-4 Big 12
Returning starters: seven offense, nine defense, two special teams
Key losses: WR Devin Duvernay, WR Collin Johnson, G Parker Braun, C Zach Shackelford, DE Malcolm Roach, S Brandon Jones.

Outlook: Is Year 4 now or never for Longhorns coach Tom Herman? Texas has fallen short of preseason expectations the past two seasons, and Herman made wholesale changes to his coaching staff after an 8-5 campaign in 2019. Herman hired seven new assistants, including offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich (from Ohio State) and defensive coordinator Chris Ash (former Rutgers head coach). Herman also plucked Oklahoma's Jay Boulware to be his associate head coach for special teams/tight ends. Ash, a former defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, Arkansas and Ohio State, will try to improve a defense that surrendered 431.5 yards per game last season, the third most in school history. Yurcich got the better end of the deal with quarterback Sam Ehlinger (33 career starts) returning. The Longhorns will have to identify new go-to receivers after Duvernay and Johnson exhausted their eligibility.

We can mock it but we've shown nothing in a decade to get any respect.

If these tanking hold true and we're we finish as the 4th best team in the Big 12 Herman is not the answer. Especially with a 4 yr QB.....

I agree. My mocking has to do with that rating will have nothing to do with how we do next year.

So a customer of mine is about as well connected in TCU circles as one can get. I saw him today. We talk and given we beat them last night in hoops, he teased me about Shaka (I should have been teasing him instead).

I'm like, thats fine. We can always fire him.

"I don't think so," he said. "Buddy of mine is close friends with CDC. CDC says they can't fire him. Contract is too fat."

I then strangled my friend.

Someone here said it best. Something like "We suck, until we don't".

There was one inaccuracy in this story. Texas exceeded expectations in 2018. If you want to look at predictors, FPI is pretty accurate, not a way too early top 25.

I'm of the belief that Herman needs to go ahead and make the conference championship.

Not much room for error in your fourth year with a new staff imo.

So I guess you think CDC put Herman on notice? I do too. But why not Smart as well? His buyout has got to be substantially less than Herman's.

I don't think it is. I think Shaka got his new deal right before CTH was hired. Shaka had one decent season and Patterson gave him the house.

Say things go wrong next year and Texas fires Herman, his remaining contract is still worth over $18M. I don't know if that is his buyout, I have no understanding of contract law.

How many guaranteed years does Smart have left on his contract?

Hand is tied for sixth and entering his third year. We should have a top ten OL next year.
