THE BIG 12'S 5 BEST DEFENSES: LONHORNS' ALAMO BOWL SHOWING AN ENCOURAGING SIGN FOR 2020?

3. Texas

Texas’ defense in 2019 wasn’t great. It ranked seventh in the Big 12, allowing 27.5 points per game overall. But it really showed off in that huge 38-10 bowl win over Utah. And Texas might be returning more defensive pieces than anyone else. As Athlon Sports notes, 17 of the top 20 tacklers on the roster will be back for the new season. UT also added an experienced defensive mind in Chris Ash to be the defensive coordinator. The Longhorns had just 27 sacks last season, but top tackler Joseph Ossai, who had five of those sacks, is set to return. Brandon Jones is the biggest loss defensively.

TOP RETURNING QUARTERBACKS

4.

, Texas – Is this a little high for the returning Texas starter? Some might think so after he disappointed down the stretch, but I expect a really good year from him next year as the Longhorns continue to add pieces around him.

Juwan Mitchell entering Transfer Portal. Guess he just wasn’t happy.

I believe I read a couple of times this year that he let his feelings (i.e. bad attitude) show up at games.

Not a fan.

2020 Heisman Buy and Sell

Sell: Texas QB Sam Ehlinger (14/1) -- Ehlinger received a fair bit of Heisman pub last offseason after accounting for 41 touchdowns in 2018. He accounted for a still-cool 39 touchdowns this past fall, but that mark came with 10 picks (up from five the previous season) on an 8-5 team. Ehlinger’s not sniffing New York if Texas turns in another campaign like that. And if we’re being honest, we don’t really see a 10-win season in 2020. If we’re being honest, we think the hot seat talk for HC Tom Herman is going to start to ramp up. That’s where we see the Longhorns at this juncture. If Ehlinger was sitting at 21/1 or worse, we might be enticed into taking a flier. 14/1? Hard pass.

HOW EACH TOP 25 COLLEGE  FOOTBALL TEAM WINS NEXT SEASON'S NATIONAL TITLE

This program is a long way from such heights. But for it to happen, Tom Herman's remade coaching staff must jell quickly. The defense has to return to the reliable unit it was in Herman's first two years there. The offense needs guys such as Malcolm Epps, Brennan Eagles and Jake Smith to step up now that Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson are gone. The return of Jordan Whittington would be a boost. Sam Ehlinger should -- and likely will -- continue taking steps forward. Oh, and the Longhorns probably need wins over LSU and Oklahoma if they're going to be taken seriously as a title contender, much less a team that can win it. Talk is cheap in Austin these days; the Longhorns most prove they're worthy of any hype. --Khan

What was the deal with Mitchell transferring? He played alot and played pretty well. Was he just never able to embrace the Grind of Texas football?

He improved at the end of the season but never wasn't a fit at Texas. He didn't like it here and we didn't like him not liking it here.

Love SHA and all that he brings to this site as he has legit sources, but the info on Mitchell seemed a bit off and seems to be confirmed since Mitchell has withdrawn his name from the portal this morning.  IT mods noted that there was more going on here and that both Mitchell and the coaches were communicating and this was a possibility.  Mitchell was good, despite horrific coaching last season, and should be excellent this year.

Big news as Juwann Mitchell has decided to stay. Removed his name from the transfer portal.

Just posted this on SHA's last post, but IT mods were posting about this as of late last week that this was not a certain transfer situation and that communications were ongoing and improving.  Glad he's staying
