Death Of The Big 12?

Saw this article - written by a media guy (at least that's how he describes himself) - predicts a ton of changes because of demands TV and apparel sponsors will place on the FBS schools in exchange for ongoing TV contracts.  He says we'll end up with four power conferences of 16 teams each with the Big 12 going away.

He says UT and some other Texas programs will end up in a Pac-16 with Oregon State and Washington State leaving for the Mountain West.  A bunch of other stuff too.

This guy doesn't understand that Texas and OU control how things will go.

1. Team with the SEC and Big Ten to raid the ACC

-VT & NCSU to SEC

-UVA & UNC to Big Ten

-FSU, Miami, GT, Clemson, Louisville, ND/Cincy/Pitt to Big 12

-BC, Duke, Syracuse, and ND/Pitt could look to the Pac-16 (that would give the Pac more TV slots and more exposure)

-Wake Forest has mentioned possibly dropping football if players get paid, so it is fitting that they are the odd school out.

2. Join the SEC

3. Join the Big Ten

4. Join the Pac-12

Those are the only real options to get to 4 power conferences, and the big money is NOT on the west coast!!! Now, if the 4 conferences negotiate TV contracts together, then they'd all be on equal footing, so the Pac-16 would be in play for Texas, but that appears long off.

Yep on Texas and okies controlling this thing from a Big 12 (10) perspective.

The ACC was marked for death before everything flowed out of control.

There is just too much lack of discipline and ethics in the sec for Texas to risk it's tradition with those cheaters. Okies will probably end up there. Texas/ou becomes a must have annual non conference game.

That leaves the Big 10 and Pac 12.  Being an old fart, I'd miss too much if the Horns were affiliated with the Pac 12.

The Big 10 makes the most sense, besides it was so much fun kicking Cornhusk ass.

That's my opinion and it has as much impact on the future of college football as the damn annual rye that won't go away in my backyard.

ESPN is hemorrhaging money. (Cord cutting is so hot right now).

The days of high TV contracts are mostly gone but the biggest thing is exposure on network TV. Not just NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox but TV stations like CW and other network TV channels because, as mentioned previously, cord-cutting is growing. Millennials especially just want internet and Netflix is just fine for them. Get the games on live network TV will get the ratings that justify high ad prices.

2010 thinking is not going to win out here. The trend is cord-cutting so they need eyeballs for live network TV broadcasts. The Big 12 will live on and it will bring in Central Florida and probably Memphis or Fresno State (Get that Cali Market).

Ultimately, I think it will be up to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State if the Big XII will expand. Texas and OU have no worries once 2025 arrives. The rest of the conference (excepting Tech, Oklahoma State and to a degree Kansas) will be screwed if Texas and OU blow up the Big XII. The question is does Tech, OSU and Kansas have coat tails? If they do not, do not expect them to do the bidding of the big boys.
