Principal
Who ever was behind keeping him playing behind Swoops, needs to be replaced next season. I have lost a lot of respect of the coach or coaches behind keeping Swoops in front of Heard for as long as they did, that includes Charlie Strong ! oldmanriver
You ask a legitimate question. Texas coaches have been the butt of jokes from the national media because of the misses on players like Robert Griffin, Johnny Manziel and Drew Brees. It is inexplicable the gaffe made by not giving Jerrod Heard the slightest look at starting at quarterback. Shawn Watson's job should be reevaluated immediately. GBT
Who was behind recruiting QBs for 2016/17...If it was Watson, shouldn't this be re-evaluated ?

J.B. TexasEx
— Twitter API (@twitterapi) November 7, 2011 It's clear now that Watson was too emotionally and schematically invested in Swoopes, he rigged the QB competition accordingly (subconsciously, not as part of a nefarious plot to take down Texas football) and he completely lost sight of the forest for the trees. Strong realized that, made the correct change and there's little use in dwelling on it anymore. Bear19

Except to point out the change should've been made last spring. java
java
During his Freshman year, it's unlikely Heard was physically ready to play. I'm not talking about skill level, simply size and strength. I don't know how much weight and muscle mass he gained during his freshman year, but I would think that he is substantially stronger. Principal
It will be hard to justify why it took so long to put him on the field. I understand it is time to move on but damn, that was a mistake that should not have happened.
CCausey11
Not playing him last year was the right move and saving the redshirt. This year, in reality it was one game he missed. Shoulda coulda woulda...you'll drive yourself crazy wondering about the past. Enjoy the future and quit looking for blame. The plan was to redshirt him baring an emergency. However if they really were waiting just 1 game, why demote Watson? Viva la Heard! Viva la Norvell! Viva la Heard! Viva la Norvell! oh I don't think the plan was to start Seoopes one game and bring JH in. It's fair to criticize Charlie for sticking with Watson and heard thru spring and fall. But he also gets credit for pulling the trigger on both after just one game. tejasrulz

UTfish
I'm good with him redshirting last year. I would have liked him to have started the Notre Dame game. Actually, I'm good with the way things played out. With Watson calling the plays, Heard would have been handcuffed instead of showcased. Shaking his confidence at least, and getting him hurt at worst. O-line looks better since that game, giving him a much better chance. The score may have been closer, but the outcome would have been the same IMHO, still a bad loss. Tho we ended up losing to Cal, Heard still came out a winner, and that loss did nothing to blemish his record or his confidence.

Principal
Hard to justify playing him behind Swoops all summer or ND. Moving forward it is clear to all he is the QB at Texas.
Shannon Kelley
I don't think Heard fit what watson was trying to do. Watson wanted to run a west coast dink and dunk style (nothing wrong with that) and Watson may have been right. However, it is my belief that you know what you recruited or has been recruited. It is the coaches job to "fit" his offensive style that compliments what your QB does best. That being said, when you have a talented blazer that can make plays with his feet, one would think you would want to go with a spread style offense that allows for your QB to make plays with his feet. Defending a QB that can run/throw, puts a tremendous amount of pressure on a defense. They have to read and react, which slows their momentum tremendously. Furthermore, it makes you have to take someone out of coverage to spy the QB. If you don't, you pay. Heards biggest asset is his feet AT THIS TIME. Wait until he sees the field and and can go through his progressions. He is electric, dynamic and those guys are hard to find and even more difficult to recruit, because so many spread offenses demand them. The ability to run is what made VY great. I believe this kid has the ability to get much better, he just needs more seat time. This is Heards best offense which compliments his ability much more than a west coast style. Kudos to Coach Strong for making the move. CCausey11, Sirhornsalot, North Texas Golfer and 2 others

Optics right now suck for Watson as it looks like he just didn't know a talent when he saw it. I think you're right though. He was trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Swoopes, as awful as he is, was the only pro-style option Watson had. So it was on him for forcing it and not adapting his style, as you said. BTW, I love it when you post.
