primal defense
BYU sounds like the only team listed that would be an asset for Big 12. J.B. TexasEx
I don't see it happening unless Big12 teams are shut out of the CFP for another year or two. No reason to expand unless teams add value. bcherry168
streettopeschel
Not sure what the upside is for a university president to comment like that. If he believes it, work behind the scenes to make it happen but going public with 'I wish we had got Louisville' looks weak. Sirhornsalot
This just in. People in hell want ice water. This conference is already top-heavy. I can't see adding another couple of bottom dwellers. Louisville would have been a great add from a standpoint of quality teams and proximity to West Virginia. BYU still makes no sense, geographically. But neither does WVU. doc longhorn and bcherry168
J.B. TexasEx
*The Big 12 Golden Rule Keep in mind that any discussion of conference matters in the Big 12 has to start with one question: What do Texas and Oklahoma think? My impression is that this wasn't a "I wish we got Louisville" comment, but more of a "I wish we had 12-members" comment. If for no other reason than the fact that it keeps conferences, schools, and the media on their toes, I'm glad he spoke up. aUTfan
aUTfan
I agree with Boren completely, i think it's best to try to stabilize the league before it becomes unstable again. I really wish they would have talked to Florida St. but i would love to add UCF and USF as soon as possible and maybe when the ACC contract is up with Fla St. it entices them on over at that time???? Could you imagine an eastern conference with West virginia, UCF, USF and Fla St. pitted against a Western conference with OU, Texas, TCU, Baylor? thats a pretty sweet alternative to Nebraska, Missouri, A&M...... in fact i like it better. Both of the UCF and USF markets and teams are long term projects that would eventually in my opinion pay huge dividends not just monetarily. All of our teams would get exposure in Florida something I'm sure they would all like. I also believe those teams are stronger in football than people think and might even become stronger once added to the big XII (I believe their recruiting would improve). i think those markets are really untapped at the moment and I'm betting that once they were added that other conferences would have wished they added them. Just my thoughts. I really don't want to see our conference spread out with BYU, West Virginia and Louisville........it reaks of desparation when we shouldn't be desparate, this conference can do better than that. and i'm not saying those teams arent worthy, i'm just saying from a geographical standpoint it would reak. I'd really like to see the Big12 in FL, but FSU is locked down with the ACC's grant of rights until 2025 minimum. I'm on the fence about adding both UCF and USF due to market overlap. Do we need both? UT has UCF and USF on their future non-conference schedules, too. Do we even need them in the league to add value to UT's brand? Yes, I know that's selfish thinking. If he believes it, work behind the scenes to make it happen but going public with 'I wish we had got Louisville' looks weak. Boren is not an academic, he's a politician. It seems like every year about this time (going back to at least '11) he wants something from the Big 12 and he takes his case to the media. He loves the attention and he usually gets what he wants, except for Louisville. We know he wants a 12 team Big 12, he's said it repeatedly. Whatever else he said, I don't think you can take it for face value. One thing you can be sure of, he's angling for something. streettopeschel

What would the ACC do if FSU left? Televise their Big 12 games through 2025? I'm sure it gets more complicated than TV rights, but those rights alone don't really mean anything if FSU isn't in the ACC. I don't think we need both. I think you take UCF simply because of potential and they are a huge, huge system. Don't see much upside in USF as two schools in Florida is already a good footprint (assuming you go after FSU at some point). If you're going to look at FSU down the stretch somewhere, you should also look at Georgia Tech. Sure wish we had pursued Louisville when there was a good shot. It would have worked well with WVU. I'm pretty sure every current ACC member signed a revised Grant of Rights agreement. FSU can leave, sure, but it'll cost a cash-strapped athletic department big money to bail. For reference, it cost Maryland $31MM to escape to the B1G. http://www.testudotimes.com/2014/8/8/5983305/maryland-acc-lawsuit-settlement-result

Obviously every conference has some not so desirable locations! Hey, just look at College Station, number one destination spot in the SEC... Sirhornsalot
Boren is only doing this to put it out there that OU can be had. I would imagine he's sending some signals to the SEC. Publicly expressing dissatisfaction with your conference while there is no real viable option for helping your conference (by addition), that spells a public flirtation to me.
