  1. “HORN†In On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. June 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown Business Success... A Piece Of Cake A Piece of Cake by Frank Agin, AmSpirit Business Connections Who doesn't love cake? No one, that's who. Some might like one kind more than another – white, chocolate, sponge, angel food, upside down, or whatever. Nevertheless, everyone loves cake. There are two ways of baking a cake. With the first, before you bake the batter you have to gather up all the various ingredients. You will need things like all-purpose flour, salt, milk, shortening, flavoring, and baking powder (not soda ... very important). Then you will need to correctly measure each out, being sure to keep straight cups, teaspoons, and tablespoons. Finally, you need to mix it all up in the right order. With the second way, you buy a box of cake mix, add some milk, a couple eggs and you are good to go. Either way (after 25 minutes in the oven at 350 degrees and some frosting), you have delicious cake to enjoy. Yum! Success in business is much the same. Who wouldn't want to have their own successful business? Any reasonably intelligent person, like you, would. After all, who doesn't love freedom, pride of ownership, and the ability to chart their own course? Again, there are two ways to accomplish this. With the first, you need to develop the concept, including the product or service, pricing, as well as means of distribution. Then you work up the branding, such as logos, marketing materials and advertising programs, and then diligently protect it all with copyrights, and trademarks. Then you pull this all together in a process, which might include legal agreements, training and development programs, procedures for dealing with employees and unhappy customers, as well as researching equipment, technologies and other infrastructure. Whew! With the second way, you simply buy a franchise. Either way (after infusing commitment, energy, and enthusiasm), you have your own successful business. Cool! The only question remaining is whether you want to undertake the high expense and incredibly complicated (and risky) process of building a successful business from scratch or essentially grabbing one ready-to-go off the shelf? Remember with franchising, business success is really a piece of cake. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Perhaps you have always dreamed about being self-employed? So, if self-employment...business ownership is your aspiration...are you going to stand on the sideline and watch opportunity pass you by, or take positive steps towards realizing your dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners? Remember, a window of opportunity won't open itself.... The 10 Types of Franchises to Watch in 2015 ENTREPRENEUR Every year we gaze into the future and try to pick 10 franchise categories that will make the biggest splash in the coming 12 months. For 2015, we’ve chosen a mix of established categories that are being invigorated by new ideas, sophomore industries that are just starting to show their strength and promising but unproven concepts. No matter what type of franchise you’re interested in pursuing, always do your research before investing. ü Children’s Enrichment - Children's sports, fitness, art and music programs continue to perform well, but STEM is the big word in the enrichment world. In the past few years, several fast-growing franchises have focused on making science, technology, engineering and math fun for kids. ü E-Cigarettes - With close to 6 million adults now using e-cigarettes, it's no surprise that stores have started to franchise. But legislators scrambling to catch up with the trend by imposing new regulations could challenge the fledgling industry's growth. ü Fitness - You may hate going to the gym, but in the franchise world, there's nothing but love for the fitness category. Large gym franchises are still going strong, while smaller concepts are gaining muscle by offering niche options, like kickboxing, Pilates, dance and in-home training. ü Paint-and-Sip Studios - First added to our trends list last year, this entertainment concept is still relatively new but already proving itself, with more competitors making an appearance and existing companies experiencing impressive growth ü Pizza - Traditional delivery-focused pizza franchises abound, but it's fast-casual, build-your-own joints using an assembly-line format that are bringing renewed popularity to the sector. ü Potatoes - Is the humble spud ready to go from side dish to starring role? A handful of new franchises are betting on it by offering menus featuring baked potatoes, fries, tater tots, chips and nothing else. ü Property Management - In the wake of the housing market crash of 2008, the number of rental properties rose--and so did the need for people to manage those properties. The success of the franchises that stepped up to fill that need has attracted a healthy group of new competitors. ü Senior Care - Senior home care has become one of the mainstays of franchising, but the field continues to evolve. New companies are competing with their more established counterparts by introducing additional services like patient advocacy and assisted-living placement. ü Spa Services - In just over a decade, the massage business has become one of franchising's most competitive areas. Other spa and beauty services, like waxing, threading and spray tanning, are following its lead to reach more customers through franchising. ü Vending - Vending has long been a popular avenue for those looking to start their own business, yet it has rarely been franchised--until recently. The success of these new ventures is likely to attract even more vending companies to the franchise model in the future. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. The White Envelope... It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. It all began because my husband hated Christmas---oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the “craziness†of Christmas – where he had a tendency to sit back and do WAY too much thinking, about his future, his family, what he wanted to be when he grew up, so to say. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to do something for him. The inspiration came in an unusual way – I was watching a magician on television doing a “trick†when it struck me… I asked him to write down for me, every New Year’s Day, what he wanted from his life. It didn’t matter what he put down – this was for him. And I didn’t want to see it. Then, every Thanksgiving weekend, when we put up the Christmas tree, I’d ask him to open it and see what it said. And then I’d ask him, “Are you closer to reaching it? If not, what can I do to help?†After a couple of years of this, my husband turned to me and said, “Yes, you can help. You see – I want to own my own business. I’ve always realized I could build equity for our family better this way – plus get away from the corporate nonsense I deal with every day. But if we do this, we’re going to have to tighten our belts in the short-term. Are you ready to help?†I nearly keeled over from shock. I had become accustomed to our nice little life – and knowing my husband was able to make a good salary and support our family well. I worked as well, but was also busy with the kids, so we depended largely on his salary. “What are you considering?†I asked, trying to sound supportive. “Well, I’m looking at buying a franchise,†he said. “I’ve been working with a franchise consultant, and he has helped me understand my skills and what franchise companies would be right for me. I’m in the process of investigating several right now – and one, in particular, is looking like a really good fit for us.†“Oh. C…,†I mumbled, and then quickly began thinking of ways I could submarine this radical thinking that was going to destroy the security of our family. “Have you spoken with your Dad about this?†“Yes, I have,†my husband said, “and he asked me if I had the ‘stuff’ to make it work?†“Well, do you?, “ I asked. “I don’t know,†my husband replied, “but I DO know that if I don’t see this through, I’ll never be happy, because I will have never seen through what I thought I could do with myself in life.†“Well, obviously this is important to you.†I offered. “Let’s share it with family when they’re here for the holidays – and see what they have to say,†hoping in my heart they’d help me out on this issue. “We can do that,†he said, “but I don’t need another WIPE-OUT. You know, WELL-INTENTIONED PERSONS OFFERING UNINFORMED THOUGHTS? My Dad has been doing that to me my whole life. It took me years to understand that he didn’t mean me harm, but that he wished for my safety, and that suggesting I avoid risk was his way of doing it.†“I’ve already spoken with a lot of people,†he went on to say. “And I’ve learned that once you begin to talk about your desires to own your own business, you will get all sorts of comments back that don’t always reflect an understanding of who you really are, and certainly don’t reflect a knowledge of the business you are investigating. Be it your father, or your “know-it-all†sister-in-law, or your neighbor, or your co-worker. They all seem to have an opinion. I have learned I needed to understand two things. First, as I said, I’ve learned that my loved ones have my “safety†at heart – not my “success†– so they are hardly in the position to advise me to do something that would put me or my family at any risk at all. Secondly, many can make a comment that may appear to have my best interest at heart, but that person doesn’t have the details I have in investigating a business. I guess I’ve learned this is something I simply have to do on my own. Wow, I thought. He’s got me pegged. “OK, then what can I do here?†“Join me in this investigation process,†he requested. “Work with me to learn about these businesses. And then we can decide together – if this one particular business isn’t right, it won’t change how I feel. I still want to do this.†Well, we did exactly what he asked me to…and 7 years ago, we purchased a franchise business together. It has met his personal fulfillment needs – and neither of us has ever regretted a minute. But why still the “white envelope,†you say? Do I still have him fill it out every year? “No, I don’t. These days it is no more than an empty envelope. But it’s a constant reminder to me to that I almost “blew it. That I was thinking about what I thought was right for me, not for my husband, or for our family. And that reminder is the best message I can receive every holidayâ€. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. The Most Highly Paid Employees…. Following my graduation from UT, I spent 25 years toiling in corporate America employment in increasingly more responsible Human Resources roles. Over the years, I came to learn that many Compensation Specialists considered commissioned sales people to be the most highly paid employees (excluding corporate senior executives) in the country. Based on my HR experience, I also believe this to be true. In the Business Section of the March 3, 2015 issue of the San Antonio Express-News , there is an article highlighting the six (6) wealthiest San Antonio billionaires on Forbes magazine’s listing of the world’s billionaires for 2015…Charles Butt; Rodney Lewis; Tom Benson; B.J. “Red†McCombs; “Kit†Goldsbury; and James Leininger. Reading the article got me to thinking. Is there a common denominator between these rich men? And, there is… The correlation between each of these highly successful men…They Are ALL Present or Former Business Owners. So, think about it. The highest paid employees (excluding corporate senior executives) are employed in commissioned sales roles. And, the wealthiest folks in the U.S. (and the free-world) are BUSINESS OWNERS. Yep, it is true…where there is risk, there can also be great reward. Wealth: Having ownership in a business is the classic path to creating wealth. When you build a business you are building an asset that grows in value and can eventually be sold--hopefully for quite a bit of money. This wealth payoff to the owner is on top of the income received during the operation of the business. Owning a business involves taking more risk in the beginning, but the reward is that any wealth created through your efforts will accrue to you rather than to someone else (as it does when you have a job). This factor is very important to most people who choose to become business owners. There is a book written by John Ortberg, “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boatâ€. The “boat†is what you hang on to, or whatever represents safety and security to you and that which pulls you away from the high adventure you actually seek. For many, moving towards the dream of being a business owner is simply letting go of the boat we call “corporate Americaâ€. What it really entails is going after what you were made to do, leaving the illusory lifeboat behind and setting sail for uncharted waters. ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown Rapidly the World is changing before our eyes. Consistent pay raises have given way to ongoing wage freezes, or minimal increases. The notion of lifetime employment is being replaced by downsizing, outsourcing, and off-shoring. It is no secret: to build wealth in America you need to build a business. To ensure success, however, you are best to not go it alone, which is where the notion of franchising comes in. We are now in the era of the franchise. Did you know that that 90%+ of all franchises opened during the past five (5) years are still open? With what degree of certainty can you forecast that you will still have your job in five (5) years? Franchises are everywhere today. Even during tight economic conditions, consumers must still buy goods and services. As the economy continues to improve and expand, businesses in operation today, will have a golden opportunity to increase their market share. In fact, financial experts believe that franchising is the “wave of the futureâ€. During the next 10 years, franchises could comprise over 50% of the retail and service sectors. This tremendous growth should be expected based on the underlying concept-Franchises offer aspiring business owners the greatest potential for success, with the least amount of risk. Franchises will provide thousands of individuals the opportunity to realize their dream of successful business ownership and financial independence. Within both the U.S. and world economies, franchising is continuing to evolve. This evolution will create even greater avenues for wealth accumulation among both franchisees and franchisors. The existing franchise systems will become more successful and continue to grow, while new franchises will be developed and introduced to the market. WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2015 – Franchise businesses are expected to grow and create more jobs at a faster pace than the rest of the economy in 2015 for the fifth consecutive year, according to The Franchise Business Economic Outlook: 2015 released today by the International Franchise Association (IFA) Educational Foundation and IHS Economics. "Franchising is an American success story. Independently-owned and operated local franchise businesses are growing faster, creating more jobs at a quicker pace and producing higher sales growth than other businesses. Franchising is a vital engine of economic expansion in the United States and 2015 looks to be another strong year for franchise businesses," said IFA President & CEO Steve Caldeira.
