  1. I'm going to get the entire press conference up in a bit, but important notes: On his first practice: "Nobody impressed. Nobody disappointed in shorts." Due to new NCAA rules there are no two-a-days. Tom Herman didn't exactly seem to be a fan of the way it was implemented stating a problem with guys showing up July 31st, stating, "29 practices is 29 practices, but the kids reporting in July is a bit much." States he doesn't blame NCAA, but is looking for the NCAA to talk to coaches to clean up the process. Earlier in the Spring, Herman stated that Shane Buechele needed to be more vocal and show more leadership. When asked today what he's seen so far out of his Shane, Tom Herman simply said, "That he has a voice." He went on to say that he believes leaders on the team like Connor Williams, Malik Jefferson, and PJ Locke already are vocal. Is encouraged by Shane. Also states Jerrod Heard is a locker room favorite and has encouraged him to start to be a more vocal leader. For anyone who follows the program closely, they should know Tom Herman isn't a huge fan of no-pads practice when it comes to evaluating players... or in general. Says he is using the few days of no pads practices to instill a culture and drill in the new offense and defense. Although he also lamented that they'll have to re-teach it in pads. According to Tom there was a lot of improvement of the team over the summer like increased verticals by 1.5" and 70lbs added to their average squat. There were more specific numbers, and I'll get them up here ASAP. He also reported the team collectively lost 500 pounds of body fat, and added 380 pounds of muscle mass. When asked about his thoughts on the new found depth at the TE position with the new freshmen and Kellen Moore, Tom Herman said, "Theyre bodies... Scholarship worthy bodies." Seems he is still waiting until pads before he begins to even feel remotely good about that position. Herman also reported that Chris Warren is sitting at 254lbs and he wants him at 250 by Maryland. Also states Reggie Hemphill-Mapps is in store for a break out year. Tom Herman is not very confident if Damion Miller will make it into the class. Says Jamari Chisholm will be on the team soon. More coming soon!

  3. The only knock schools have on him is his technical skills. His route running could use a bit of fine tuning (which is where I usually catch him. At a trainer running routes). Other then that he's extremely athletic, only held back by the talent that surrounds him right now at Schertz-Clemens which is not bad, but is nothing like other schools like Cibolo Steele.
  4. Mid-afternoon on Tuesday, Tommy Bush, a 6'4.5" 191-pound with a sub 4.5-forty, announced through twitter that he decided to take a trip up the road from Schertz, TX to visit Tom Herman. I got the chance to catch up with Tommy about his trip to Austin. "It was great. We had a tour of the new locker room and other areas that have been updated. [My family and I] had a 20 minute meeting with Coach Herman just talking family. Afterwards my family and I sat down with Coach Mehringer for a few hours talking about family, football, and education... I'm just enjoying getting to know the staff. I really enjoyed my time there as we were really getting to know each other." After Texas took time extending an offer, Tommy and his family seem to be coming to terms with the late offer. Tom Herman is doing well selling the program to Tommy as well, putting Texas in a good position. Right now Texas' main competition in this race is the boys in Waco, but Texas has taken a huge step in this recruitment and is heading in the right direction.
  5. This week on 4th and 5, HornSports' Will Baizer and InsideTexas' Joe Cook come back with a loaded show. They do a quick run down of Big 12 Media Days, go over Tom Herman's Stars at Night camp, break down the last 4 commitments, and then marvel at Jordan Spieth's Opening performance.
  6. The Texas Longhorns now have 4 of the top 5 players in state committed. Texas now now has the 4th ranked 2018 class with 14 commits averaging a composite of 93.52 (excluding kicker, 94.41).
  7. Another Houston domino has fallen, and this time it is of the five star variety. When Brennan Eagles showed up to the Houston Regional of The Opening, most knew of him, but hadn’t seen him before. However, as soon as he stepped onto the field, every single person in attendance was impressed with his size, strength, and speed. It wasn’t until he beat every single defender in one-on-ones that people realized just how elite he is. The Texas coaches knew long before everyone else what Brennan Eagles possessed, and Drew Mehringer worked tirelessly to build up a relationship with Eagles that trumped that of teams like Clemson, LSU and Oklahoma. And Mehringer’s reward? Texas now, in Eagles, has one of the best wide receivers in the nation, the highest-rated wide receiver in Texas, and their second highest rated recruit in the class. Film Analysis As I said above, the 6’3.5", 214-pound Alief Taylor wide receiver drew national attention during The Opening regional when he ran a 4.51 40-yard dash and 3.99 shuttle in addition to registering a 37-inch vertical leap…at 214 pounds. Then, he went up against some of the best defensive backs in the country and high pointed balls over guys like Anthony Cook, Jalen Green, and others. Eagles has the size, speed, frame, and explosiveness that a wide receivers coach covets. How does he do on the field? Eagles is your prototypical outside wide receiver, and draws comparisons to the likes of Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons and Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals - receivers who are physical at the line of scrimmage, but have the ability to win the ball in the back corner of the end zone. Eagles also uses his huge frame, strength, and pure athleticism to really make 50/50 ball situations a bit unfair, and when he comes down with the ball, his 220-pound frame makes it difficult for defensive backs to bring him down. His hands are not a concern either, as he has displayed his strong but soft hands in camps and on film with his ability to hang onto a ball while a defensive back hangs onto him and tries to wrench his arms open. Eagles also runs a multitude of different routes. He’s not your average #1 receiver who only does well with the go route, although he’s pretty good at it. His high school has mainly kept him to the outside, but he has excelled in the screen game, short routes, digs, quick ins, and of course the go. He’s not too shabby as a blocker either, which often goes unnoticed. The only problem I have with him whatsoever is his ability to get off the line, as he’s a bit slow off the line. Final Verdict And so, another big time Houston-area talent has been snatched up by Tom Herman with the help of Mehringer. Most have been in awe of all of the talent on the defensive side of the ball in this class, but with Eagles in the fold, the offensive side of the ball looks like it is in amazing shape for 2018. Brennan possesses the size and speed to be a big-time threat at the next level, and Mehringer has to be salivating at the thought of having him as one of his offensive weapons. Herman and his staff made it a priority to win over the talent rich Houston area this cycle, and with Eagles now on board they continue to stack talent in a major way. With guys like Eagles, Al’vonte Woodard, and Jalen Green on board, the staff’s attention will now turn Houston Lamar’s Anthony Cook and D’Shawn Jamison. Texas is in thick of it for both prospects, and it’s not out of the question for them to land both.

  11. Braedon Mowry is a DE at Katy Taylor playing along side 2018 stud DL Max Wright. He's a monster on the line and his film is very impressive. I talked with Braedon Mowry about his trip down to Austin to visit the campus of UT. How was the trip? The trip was amazing! We toured the dorms got to see most of the facility tried on the all whites ( looked amazing ) looked at the campus and we talked about majors. What was your favorite? I like how everything is at your fingertips, the dorms are right across the street from everything you need, I also like how coach Giles and Naivar are straight forward Which coaches were there when yall went? Giles, Naivar, Brian Carrington. Great people to work with. What do you think of Naivar? His personality as a coach and person are so different. He's someone who won't settle for average. That's great coaching to me. Sounds like you really liked Texas man. Of course. They are very high on my list
  12. It has been reported by our friends over at InsideTexas that Buechele has weighed in at 205lbs and it's all in his legs. Hopefully this means we don't get a Jonathon Gray playing over D'Onta Foreman situation again.
  13. 2019 DE and Texas offer holder Braedon Mowry visited Texas today.
  14. Heads up, Texas is no longer in it with Colleyville Heritage and UCLA commit WR Kameron Brown.
  15. 2020 DB RJ Mickens RJ Mickens is blowing up very early on and can claim offers from schools like Alabama, Stanford, and Texas A&M. The Longhorn coaches are keeping in contact with the technically sound DB, but have yet to pull the trigger on an offer. He will be back in Austin the 21st What are the Texas coaches telling you? They're telling me to come down the 21st. They want to see me play more because they don't know which position I can play whether it is corner, nickle or safety. What are you looking for in Austin next week? Just to have a good performance and show them I can play a bit. Also to meet guys like DeShon Elliott and them all. The staff is really cool and they show a lot of love.
  16. 2020 5-star RB Jase McClellan I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Jase McClellan is the best RB in the state regardless of class. It's super early on for this guy, but he's already blown up. Texas is yet to offer him, but he's been to Austin plenty of times for 1-on-1 time with Stan Drayton, and he will be going back down to Austin next week 7/21. I'd look for the staff to extend their first 2020 offer soon to this guy. What are you looking for to this time in Austin? I looking for an offer and get closer with Coach Drayton and the rest of the coaching staff. What do you think of Stan Drayton? He's a nice guy. He'll get on you when you mess up, but he knows how to fix it. What schools are sticking out to you early here? Texas, UGA, and Oklahoma. What was your last visit there like? It was an experience getting Stan Drayton to teach me and learn under him. Then I got to get some one-on-one time with Coach Drayton and he took me around the campus and the locker room. What right now will be the big deciding factor for which school you go to? The personality of the running back coach, family of the team, and my connection with the team and the coaching staff.
  17. Trinity Christian High School in Cedar Hill, TX
  18. 4-star WR Arjei Henderson One of the best WRs in the country. Arjei was an Oklahoma commit early, but decommitted pretty soon afterwards. Now he's pretty enamored with the Longhorns and Mehringer is doing a good job at nurturing the relationship. He will be visiting next week 7/21 for the camp. What are you looking for during your trip to Texas? The same things I've always seen in UT. Great program and great coaches. Looking for the atmosphere and building relationships there. Last time I was there back in January and they weren't even done with the construction, but I loved it. I'm looking for what I've always seen... and those new lockers. What's Tom Herman like? Shhh... He crazy. Real cool dude. He's about business. I feel he's about to turn the program around like he did at U of H. He's has a purpose and I'm ready to see what he does with the program. What about the other coaches? Coach Naivar and Coach Mehringer came down to my Spring practice a couple of times. Naivar is a crazy dude. They're all crazy. They all have a winning attitude. So why did you end up decommitting fro Oklahoma? I just rushed the process. They're definitely not out of the question, but I want to take a second to look at things, weigh my options and make the best decision.
