I need some help grasping something.

I think we all agree, Red should have kept his opinion behind closed doors.

What I took away from what Red said was that we hire a coach that was not competent enough to be the HC at Texas.

A day later, with rumors flying around that the same HC is going to bring on Shawn Watson, his OC at Louisville, our fan base is hollering

that is a incompetent hire.

Don't get me wrong, I see the difference in Red being a 200 million plus donor going over the airwaves and stating as much but, I also see our fanbase stating as much if Strong indeed brings on Watson.

So, are the fans saying Strong is competent enough to be our head coach but, not competent enough to pick his own assistants?

With that said, I'm not a fan of Shawn Watson's.

No what Red said was Strong wasnt competent enough to be a head coach period. it wasnt just about at Texas...he then went on to say a position coach...or maaaaybe a coordinator

McP.

I have said consistently that my problem with Red is he did it in the media. He certainly has a right to his opinion as we all do. He just needs to understand that his opinion in public carries a lot more weight than some dumba$$ message board poster like me so he needs to be careful what he says to the media.

No, the issue is with him having an open checkbook to assemble a great staff, and all he winds up doing is bringing his UL staff over.

Mcphaul, I think you make a valid point, however, his offensive style does not seem to mesh with the personnel we have/are bringing onto campus. I think many had high hopes for a solid staff based on Coach Strong's comments. Honestly, my opinion is based solely on the very little I know about Watson. As stated in another post, my opinion is that a spread would allow us to utilize our personnel more fully, especially the dual-threat style qbs we are bringing in. Furthermore, this gives the D a chance to practice against an offense that is in line with those we face on a weekly basis.

Watson hasnt been hired yet. What other UL staff members do people have an issue with and why?

Red should offer Gruden 10 Mil/yr (side deal) to be the OC.

Heck, he would already be on staff as coach in waiting if we need to make a change :)

Put yer money where your mouth is RED !!!

Otherwise STFU.

Thanks McPhaul for your input...now come across with more information about all of the position coaches. You need to call Coach Strong and AD Patterson and get back with US IF Possible and pretty please.

Watson never had a QB throw for more yards and touchdowns to the opponent than his own team in consecutive games. Just sayin....

Coach Strong is now talking about his RB coach to Texas..See here what is happening.

Red should've kept his mouth closed. Case closed. Fans are fans. They would've done this to any coach that didn't follow the plan they think he should've. The difference? Each fans opinion is not spread all over the media right now making the University look bad.

Haha! I hear you. +1

Yep. He is hiring a coaching staff. We were so tired of the good ole boy mess and bad hires. Let this one play out.

and? Does anyone here really know that coach is not really..really good or is not someone Charlie Strong should be allowed to hire? He may have zero relationship with Porter. He may not know the guy at all, or feel comfortable trusting the position to someone he doesnt know. Porter may be interested in something else or may not mesh with the rest of the staff. Who the hell knows. Strong should be allowed to hire his own staff...period or otherwise you might as well fire his ass now if people are going to go Jerry Jones and decide who his staff needs to be

You dont hire a head coach - then not trust them to surround themselves with staff members they feel comfortable with. You dont hire someone and then force coaches on them they dont even know or have a relationship with

I am quite sure that the majority of the people that visit this website have never coached football. Much less been the head coach at a major university. That being said, Charlie Strong has been a coach at a major university and is the coach at the University of Texas....

According to Patterson and Powers, Charlie Strong has EARNED the right to pick and choose his staff. He also knows a lot more about 'his' coaches than anyone else does on the site.

Too many people are caught up in the 'fantacy' coaching staff league..........and want all of the BIG TIME names.

Who did Bob Stoops have as his OC when he was hired at OU? Mike Leach....

Offensive Coordinator Oklahoma Sooners 1999

Offensive Coordinator Kentucky Wildcats 1997 - 1998

Offensive Coordinator Valdosta State Blazers 1992 - 1996

Offensive Coordinator Iowa Wesleyan Tigers 1990 - 1991

I don't think Mike Leach was the so-called cats meow back in 1999

Who was the OC for Pete Carroll when he was hired at USC? Norm Chow

Norm Chow had one year as an OC at NC State in 2000. Prior to that he was at BYU as a long time assistant coach.

My point is.....We really are spending too much time treating this like a fantacy draft of the best of the best.

Charlie Strong did not earn this job by making poor decisions.

He will adjust our vision and put us in a better place in no time by developing the TEXAS talent that he is going to recruit.

It's not about the X's and O's but about the Jimmy's and Joe's.

Well watson is not getting the Louisville job he will be here. First team meeting Sunday.
