Accounting Department Continues No. 1 Ranking Sweep
Posted by: Matt Turner | August 27, 2014 - 10:26am

Continuing to lead the nation among academic institutions of accounting, for the 10th time in 13 years the McCombs School of Business ranks No. 1 across all three of the 2014 the Public Accounting Report (PAR) Annual Professors Survey rankings: undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D.

This is the fifth year in a row McCombs took first place on all three bases. The PAR even notes in its August edition that The University of Texas at Austin "has practically formed a habit" in the three-way sweep.

Undergraduate Ranking: 1For 23 years in a row, McCombs has placed first or second in this ranking. Like last year, second place goes to the school's only undergrad rival, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, followed by Brigham Young University in third.

Master's Ranking: 1McCombs has led the nation at the master's level in 20 out of the past 21 surveys. Illinois and BYU took second and third place, respectively.

Doctoral Ranking: 1McCombs has landed among the top four doctoral programs since 1994, and has now taken the No. 1 spot six years in a row, and 11 times over the last 13 years. Currently the school ranks above the University of Chicago (2), Stanford (3), Illinois (4), and Michigan (5).

McCombs Takes Top Place Even When Bias RemovedSince accounting faculty members are the ones surveyed for the PAR rankings, there is a potential bias toward the schools where they are employed. In an attempt to adjust for this bias, PAR staff also examined what would happen if they removed those who gave their current institution the top nod — in other words, if they only ranked schools where they were not employed.

The result? McCombs still took the No. 1 spots in both the undergrad and master's rankings (PAR did not perform the check at the doctoral level).

This result was not a one-time exception. PAR also performed the bias check back in 2011 (with the doctoral level included) and McCombs pulled No. 1 on all three.
