Although I agree with the sentiment of the OP there is no need to start a thread to chastise many who feel let down with the hire. Many have a right to be.
The University of Texas thrives on difference of opinion and individuality. "In or out" is very much like an Ag statement. People on this board, and the fan base in general support the program and whoever the coach is with time, and money, to a fault. We just saw what fruits that bears with Mack. Although it is too hasty and unfair to call this a failure before the press conference even takes place, to feel this is a disappointment with the tradition rich history and resources we have to not get a more proven coach is fair, and that isn't directed at Strong in most cases as it is at the decision makers and Administration who have made this a less attractive destination for a more proven coach. The opinions of the alumni base and fans do matter, you are wrong there. My opinion matters as much as yours. We are in this predicament because we had too many people "not caring about opinions" for too long. And if half of them "need to be out" as you suggest, the well dries up and we are no longer a financial juggernaut either, in addition to being an under-delivering program. Results matter, agreed on that, and if we win in bunches immediately, it will look brilliant. Were you around after we fired Fred and went through the McWilliams and Mackovic years? If he doesn't get it done and we have to go looking again it gets worse, not better, and yes it is hard, so disagree again there as will most who have been around a while. A fan can demand whatever they want. It is reasonable to expect excellence with our resources. It is reasonable to expect a more proven coach. Doesn't mean we don't think he can be good, it just means the odds are more against it. It is too early to say how passionate this coach will be, you can't chalk that up in his column yet. If talent ultimately decided who won and lost we would have more championships and not be replacing Mack Brown, but even if it were that simple, many aren't sure that this hire will bring better talent, and it is proven that other candidates bring in better talent. Coaching is a little important in all of this too.
Glad you are on board. Many may be more skeptical and for good reason. We just bet our future on a less than proven commodity. That isn't always a winning formula. I hope he proves to be everything we all hope, he is very unproven as of yet, that is all.
