SHA's Taylor Ducks did indeed make the postseason with a 2-8 record.

4A D1 La Vernia, ranked #9 in the state, will play 1-9 Rio Grande City Grulla.

And the best of all is Houston Scarborough, 0-10 and outscored 566-82 this season. Evidently their district only has 4 football playing teams, so everybody's a winner !!

Closest town still standing to my father's birthplace which no longer exists . ..Pandora Texas. . . .

The brain-trust at HISD didn't bother informing the UIL that Jones HS was gonna be closed prior to 2014 kick-off.  Still a 2-8 team from a 5-team district making the playoffs?  Good grief...

You're now married to every Taylor Duck score. You might as well buy property there.

Where does the community now set the bar for its high school coach? First it was one team made the playoffs that was aweoms to be there, then went too two teams made the playoffs and just making it was a pretty big deal. Then there were three and it was a little watered down. Now however, with only having to win one district game in some instances it's crazy easy. Does a coach have to make it a couple rounds deep or is "making it" enough?

They have also lost 56 games in a row. For real.

I'm not sure what the logic behind the top 4 teams in each district making the playoffs. I was always under the impression that making the playoffs was a reward for a great season and not just a participation award.

interesting question. probably depends on the classification and history. our school was 2-8 last year, so yeah, 8-2 and making it feels pretty good. doesn't mean i won't be bummed if we go one-and-done but expectations weren't super high so it's been a fun ride.  i'm sure at the big boy schools like Steele, Katy, Euless and the like, that wouldn't cut it very long.

Taylor hasn't ever really put the screws to its coaching staff. The last guy (Cobia) was god awful and he stayed way too long.

This is all absurd. Playoffs should be for teams that play well enough to win games.
Couldn't agree more.  Getting into the Texas high school playoffs used to be a lofty goal attained only

by district champion teams.  A goal that was achieved through hard work and tough play, something

the players could really be proud of.  Nowadays, making the playoffs in Texas high school football

is a watered down joke.

It's the everybody needs to win mentality.

When Brandon was in little league football, his first year was horrid. They went 0-10. No heartbreaking story. They just weren't very good. No biggie, you learn and get better and look to next year.

But no, team moms got together and decided all the kids needed 1-ft high trophies "for playing." This was what I was told when I called to clarify what the "awards" were for, given they were 0-10.

When I was a kid and played little league baseball, the last place team always received the "Sportsmanship Award" during closing ceremonies. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th place teams got nothing but by golly, the last place team got this sportsmanship award. You knew if you got this little trophy, your team sucked. You hid the thing in your closet. lol . . . . not today.

I'd love to see the financials for the UIL's expanded playoffs.

It's gotta be a HUGE money grab for the UIL and participating schools.  All in the name of "giving more kids the playoff experience".  IMO, it usually just waters down the competition - especially in the 1st Round.

We've got THSFB officials blocking dates this week because they want to be available for the "better games" in later rounds.  By rule a coach cannot have the same officiating crew work more than 1 playoff game.

i'd be curious too but i wonder how huge it is at the smaller levels.

but where does the money go? participating schools? the UIL? some to the school/stadium hosting the game ? i have no clue, but i suppose somebody here knows.

In 1997, the UIL took three teams in the baseball playoffs for the first time. My McCallum Knights team finished third by rallying late to beat an inferior team in the last district game.

We went to the State Tournament and beat Taylor, Hays, Boerne, Robstown and CC Calallen to get there. I did not apologize to anyone for finishing third.

i'd guess most of us could agree there's a reasonable middle ground where having only one team per district is too exclusive, but having 0-10 and 1-9 teams make it is too inclusive.

but, the genie isn't likely going back in the bottle so it's likely a moot debate.

I think at some point the UIL will stop the 4 team districts because of the 0-10 teams getting in the playoffs while other, more deserving teams sit home.

They went too far. Hopefully, they're smart enough to see that.

There really should be a reasonable middle ground because I wouldn't want to recoil too far, either. I still remember a Chapel Hill team that finished 6-4 but got into the playoffs and won the whole thing.
