If he hadn't coached his ass off and turned a disgrace of a defense into a respectable unit-Mack would have been forced to resign much sooner.

I think the fluke (with ref help and botched INT's by the opponent) survival of pitiful Iowa State played a big role, because even though it was anything but impressive, it gave Mack and the players some kind of emotional boost. At that point, they needed anything positive, and it carried over into OU, etc.

Also extremely lucky to win the West Va game, which might also have created a tailspin.

It's amazing, though, that we're having to even talk about this, because Mack fielded the most experienced team (arguably, at the very least) in the whole country while OU, K-State and W Va had among the least. All those higher-level recruiting classes of '10-12 were now grown up; yet despite all those edges, we don't improve our W-L at all and lose all four games by three touchdowns or more!

Yeah, what a success story!
