You guys can take this as you want, as I am not someone who has any insider information, or a secret source. This is just my opinion.
Once Chip leaked the retirement of Mack, and received national attention, I think Belmont started taking this $hit seriously. We all know that Belmont and the athletic department has people who troll around all of the internet message boards, to see what is being said. Before the Mack Brown retirement leak, they probably looked at it as a bunch of Longhorn fans, discussing their Xmas wishes. Now that they realize there is a leak, they are taking things a bit more seriously.
My belief is that Belmont told Chip to follow these rules: if you want to remain close to the AD, school, team and inside information, you will post the following information. (Enter negative info on Saban). Chip is willing to take some negativity for now, until this coaching search comes to an end. Yes, people are dropping subs at OB, and going elsewhere (IT), but that could all change. Chip loves him some Chip. And if he thinks he is going to keep his insider information once the new coach is named, he is willing to do as Belmont says.....for now.
That all being said, I think this is a huge smokescreen by CB and OB. He is being told by the BMDs to keep it quiet, so Saban doesn't get scared off once again.
One more crazy thought......
what if this this were the scenario...
UT lets it out that they are looking for a new head coach, and that Saban is target número uno.
Internet rumors go galactic and everyone's neighbor, sister, ex-girlfriend, dog, uncle has a friend who saw Saban buying toilet paper at the HEB in Lakeway.
Early words are out on the interwebs that UT is offering between 7-8M/yr with extra incentives.
Alabama reacts to the chaos and lays a new contract extension on Saban's desk right around the same number.
Here's where things get kooky. What if....and that is a BIG what if.....but, what if UT purposely waited on the announcement of Mack's retirement, so we could see what cards Bama was holding in their hand?
Texas waits, Bama throws down pocket Kings and think that they have won the pot.
UT sits patiently, laughs and drops down pocket Aces.
Maybe we were waiting for Bama to give us the $$, so we could know how much to offer.
This is all a pipe dream, but just a major WHAT IF.
