Texas Men's Golf Playing In National Championship

The Texas men tee off today starting at 1:22. 30 teams play 3 rounds and then cut to the low 15 teams for a 4th round on Monday. The top 8 will advance to the match play portion starting Tuesday with the championship match on Wednesday.

Early scores so far today are indicating that scoring is really good. For Texas to advance to the match play their #1, #2, and #3 players basically cannot have any bad rounds and their #4 and #5 players will really need to really step up big time.

Here's link to the scoring.

Okay, tried to get the two threads combined but apparently it's not as easy as I assumed it would be  ;)

Anyway here's where things currently stand.

Play has started in the 2nd round and Texas is sitting in 17th place at +3, 9 strokes out of 8th place. I had said that for Texas to have a chance to get in the top 8, our top 3 players had to play well and our #4 and #5 players had to really step up. Unfortunately, our #1 player is currently tied for 113th place and our #4 and #5 players are tied for 131st place  :(  That's out of 156 players. Unless 2 of those 3 really turn things around, Texas will never make the top 8. Our #2 player, Scottie Scheffler is the only player playing well right now and is currently T5 and our #3 player is T65.

To have a chance they really need to have a good round today and so far they're treading water in the 2nd round.

Fixing to head to the course myself so won't have any more updates until late this afternoon.

Let's go guys. You can do this!

Okay, here's where thing stand.

Texas is currently in a tie for 12th. After tomorrows round, the field is cut to the low 15 with those teams playing on Monday for the 8 spots that advance to match play starting Tuesday. Texas is at Even par, which is 4 shots ahead of 15th place and 8 shots behind 8th place. So it's definitely doable. Texas did finish real strong today picking up 5 birdies in the last few holes to get to Even par.

Even better is that Scottie Scheffler shot his 2nd consecutive round of 4 under 68 and is in FIRST place for the individual championship. He has a 1 stroke lead over 4 other players.

Let's go Horns! Like I said, it's definitely doable.

Looking good very early in the 3rd round today. Still in 12th place but have moved within 4 shots of 8th place and 6 shots clear of 16th place. Top 15 move on to the final round of stroke play tomorrow with the top 8 after tomorrow moving on to the match play.

Up to 11th place at -4, 4 strokes off 8th place. Looks like we are having a good round.

Finished the day in 11th place at -5 thru 3 rounds, only 4 shots back of 8th place. Only 2 teams shot better than Texas today and yet Texas only moved up 1 place! That's mind-boggling!

Scottie Scheffler, the #2 player for the Horns, shot his 3rd consecutive 4 under par 68 and leads the individual championship by 2 shots.

They are right in the middle of this thing and it's certainly doable to get in the top 8 after tomorrow's round.

Let's go Horns and let's go Scottie!

+2 for the day so far sitting in 11th at -3. Need to pick it up to catch 8th place, who is sitting at -9.

Playing the back nine first, Texas had a really bad first nine holes and it was pretty over for their chances to make the final 8. They did have a mini-rally of sorts on their second nine and finished in 12 place, 7 shots out of 8th place which would have got them into the match play.

Scottie Scheffler, who was leading the tournament individually, got off a a really bad start as he made a bogey on his first hole and followed that with with a lost ball on his second hole and a triple bogey. Steadied the ship after that but the damage was done and he couldn't get any putts to fall as he shot a final round 78 and finished in a tie for 3rd six shots back of the winner. Gavin Hall also had a good tournament as he finished tied for 11th.

All in all, a good year for the Horns.
