In reality I guess I knew we would not get the guys in front of him. Carroll, Saban, Meyers, Shaw, Fisher, John Harbuagh, Jim Harbaugh, Mora, Briles, Strong. Franklin Through guys I knew who are friends with Mora and Briles I had eliminated them, Thought Saban. and Meyers were never coming because of the mess we created with letting Mack go. Held out hope for Shaw until he said no, and with Fisher too until he signed his extension. I was hoping John or Jim Harbaugh that they would be interested in but they both said no and report only college job John might consider would be Michigan. So who is left, Strong, or Franklin. Not saying I think Strong is a bad hiring just that he was not my first choice.

Mora and Briles did not eliminate themselves necessarily. They were interested and when Texas was going in a different direction, they have to publicly say they are are happy where they are now.

Strong wasnt my first choice, my 3rd but maybe Patterson was very impressed by the interview. Makes sense based on how Patterson got the Texas AD job.

There are so many names I think I would have at least interviewed before moving this far down the coaching food chain.

I don't think many of the names you are probably thinking of "interview", e.g., Saban doesn't have to interview for a job. You either offer them the job or you don't, but they have the cache at this point to not have to interview for the job. Not interviewing doesn't mean there weren't discussions with them or their agent, and I have to operate under the assumption that Patterson explored those opportunities.

Sorry not buying that. I think Patterson had a list and that's who he talked to. Did he ever call the BSU coach? How about Hugh Freeze? or Dabo Sweeney? The list goes on.

Not saying these guys are better than Strong but when your 2 top picks aren't interested then expand your search, take your time and find the RIGHT guy. Could that be Strong? Sure maybe but I would have talked to a lot more people than I believe we did.

If Strong is that far down on your list, i am glad you were not involved in the hiring process. Not that a hire is made. There are a few BMDs who should not be involved in the hiring process.

Are u a BMD?

Strong has done as much as. Briles these past few yrs, turned a loser into a winner, he has done it with great defense and a solid offense.at a school that is not a traditional power and he has a tougher recruiting area and a non BCS conference.

Briles was the sexy choice because of the offense and Texas connections. I suspect Strong will hit the ground running and overcome that. And you can bet we won't be undisciplined, unfocused and lead the country in penalties.

The only guys above Strong on my list were Saban and he said no, Fisher, he was Wiscy washy about it,and Harbaugh who seems to be waiting for the Michigan job to open

This is a solid hire, he deserves our sport and I think he has a good chance of turning our program around.

Agreed, my personal rank was Saban, Fisher then Strong. I think he can do great here.

Dabo Sweeney? Hugh Freeze? - If you're not saying those guys are better than Strong why bring them up? I get the impression that there were quite a few people that we talked to, but only a couple that we interviewed. If what is being said is true, even Art Briles basically said that the only way he would interview for the job is if he was essentially the choice, and Art is below a Saban, Fisher, Gruden, Harbaughx2, Shaw, etc. Why would a coach that actually likes where they work now, is well compensated (and pretty much in all cases just got a raise), and works somewhere that is considered a 9 or 9.5 out of 10 on the coaching desirability scale risk "interviewing" and not getting a job at a 10 out of 10 school (assuming Texas is that), thus causing acrimony and jilted-lover syndrome at their current employer?

I had a slightly different list.

1. Fisher

2. Harbaugh

3. Briles or Strong (really had them about the same)

Although Saban is one of the greatest of all time, I had issues with age and felt he would not fit as well in this conference. Most certainly would not have disappointed.

Strong actually moved up my list after being way down. Once I started to research him and talked to a few friends that are Louisville fans, he grew on me. I actually probably preferred him over Briles simply because of some things I heard.

So I am not all that disappointed. Does not mean it will work out and is a bigger risk, but there is real potential with Strong.

I had Briles and Strong about the same but only bc Briles ties to the state. As a pure coach i would take Strong, much more disciplined. Briles needs a great DC, while Strong needs a great OC.

It turns out Franklin also interviewed for the Texans-NFL job, which went to O'Brien.

I was unaware of this info until today and didnt really see a better place to drop it than here.

I know Strong is way down your list but no body give a F about your list or my list. We didnt talk to agents and send feelers out and didnt get answers. Its not your or my decision to make. Not only that but we dont know 5% of the truth about what has happened. So b4 anyone starts the fire X or Y or Z, gather the info and then see where you are at. Social media is not good for coaching changes and Texas BMD seem to be idiots.
