Sorry OT, but does anyone know about the Hazelwood Legacy Program?

I'm looking for someone that knows the in and outs of this program for veterans, and passing it along to their children. One of my daughters is starting high school next year in California but wants to attend UT. I was a Texas resident prior to joining the military, and Texas was my home of record until I ended my service. I did not move back to Texas after my service, so I was wondering if this program is still available. I also have found that under the Legacy Program I can transfer this benefit to my children, but cant find anything about whether I have to be a current resident of Texas, or if I had to move back after my service ended. Also is there somewhere I can go to find the standards she needs to meet to be accepted? I would like to give her goals to reach rather than telling her to do her best. I tried to find it on the UT website, but I do not find anything that shows specific GPA's test scores, etc (especially because she will be a non-resident even though my parents still live there). Thanks in advance!

Here's what I just found on the following website: Hazlewood Act | TexVet

Transferability of Benefits (Legacy Program) Eligible veterans may assign unused hours of exemption eligibility to a child under certain conditions. To be eligible, the child must: Be a Texas resident, Be the biological child, stepchild, adopted child, or claimed as a dependent in the current or previous tax year, Be 25 years or younger on the first day of the semester or term for which the exemption is claimed (unless granted an extension due to a qualifying illness or debilitating condition), and Make satisfactory academic progress in a degree, certificate, or continuing education program as determined by the institution. If a child to whom hours have been delegated fails to use all of the assigned hours, a veteran may re-assign the unused hours that are available to another dependent child. - See more at: Hazlewood Act | TexVet

Hope this helps

Unfortunately I believe she has to currently be a Texas resident. Check this out, it should tell you everything you need to know. Good luck and thanks for your service.

BTW; not saying you should cheat around that if it's accurate, but if you have family in Texas it may help.

TEXAS VETERANS COMMISSION - Hazlewood Act

If that answered your question great. . .if not. . .I have friends in the Land Commish office (handles Veteran affairs for Texas) and can research for you if you like...the Land Commish Jerry Patterson and the Lone Star Veterans Association in Houston were part of the fight to protect these benefits for our Texas Veterans. . .
