I'll be going to HEB tomorrow and getting one of those "make your own" six packs. Im looking for a couple of suggestions from the crowd on new things to try.

They (for now) have something from a place called Rahr and Sons up there as well.

I haven't tried New World yet and at $9.99 for a 24 oz, I was waiting on you to be my guinea pig.

Mike or bbdude is your point man on one that high up.

I think Im committed to the Rahr and Sons one, and I always grab a Firemans #4, so that would leave four slots.

I would like to get into the IPA's but don't like motor oil. What would be a good "starter" pale ale to get me accustomed to developing a taste for them?

Try a Real Ale Firemans #4

From Rahr, try their Ugly Pug helles. They have a Red Ale that is good, too. Apart from that, if you want an easy drinking pale ale, try Sierra Nevada. After years of trying just about anything I could get my hands on, it's a really solid choice. Anchor's Liberty Ale is great. Deschutes Mirror Pond is good as well. From there, there are about eleventy billion other pale ales that are solid choices.

My favorite Pale Ale - Sierra Nevada, hands-down.

My second favorite beer - St. Arnold's Endeavor

Both delicious.

I had a Leinenkugels Orange Shandy today. I was surprised at it being very good stuff.

There is another one Im going to try on NYE, Ill have to get the name and run it by you guys.

Nice a beer thread!

IPA's have grown on me over the years, but I still love a heavy stout sipping beer. IPA's, being more hoppy they often have pretty heavy floral notes, and I think is an acquired taste.

As DCBC mentioned, Deschutes Mirror Pond is a good pale ale and they've also got another called Inversion IPA that's good. My wife hates pale ales but likes Inversion-- so may be a good jumping of point. These aren't as hoppy as Sierra Nevada in my opinion.

Firemans #4 is awesome and that same brewery makes a Trippel called Devils Backbone which is a great bang for you buck at 8% ABV.
