ESPN's Ron Jaworski has put together a list of he top 30 QB's in the NFL. He got a lot right but he also got one thing wrong. He like a lot of other analysts missed one important thing. The point he misses is he # 17.
In his rankings he has Joe Flacco of the Ravens ranked at # 9. He also has Eli Manning at # 5. He also has Tony Romo ranked at # 10. The point he misses is the number 17, as in a defense allowing 17 or less points. On average a team wins 90% of the time when they hold the other team below 17 points. In 16 games the Ravens held 11 of 18 opponents to this goal. In those games they won 9 of those games. The Giants held their opponents to U17 in 9 games and the team won 8 of those games, including 3 in the playoffs.
I thought this was about the best QB and not who has the best team around him? Flacco is about as mediocre a QB as one team can get. The Raven's use Flacco as a bus driver all year. In 542 attempts last season he averaged an anemic 6.7 YPA.(Romo was at 8.0, one of only 4 in the league with 8 or over) That YardsPerAttempt shows he dumped the ball, yet he completed only 57% of his passes.
So why does Flacco get so much credit? The reason is obvious. Tom Landry used to say the goal of his defenses was to hold the opponent to 17 or fewer points. On an average a team wins 90% of the time when they hold the other team below 17 points. In 16 games the Ravens held 11 of 18 opponents to this goal. In those games they won 9 of those games.
This pattern of allowing less than 17 points holds true for any team. The Giants won the Super Bowl despite an 9-7 regular season. They had 9 games with their defense allowing 17 points or less and were 8-1 in those games. The key was the Giants got healthy defensively in their SB run, just like they did in their last SB run. In last season's playoffs the Giants held 3 of their 4 opponents to 17 or less and the other game they held Green Bay to 20
Want more proof? In the 2008 SB run the Giants allowed 14-20-17-and-14 points in their run. Yet Eli got the credit. It was last years scenario to a tee. Out of 20 opponents they allowed 17 points or less in 11 of those games.
The contrast of the Cowboys is startling. Last season the Cowboys allowed 4 of their opponents to score 17 or less and won every one of those games. Since Bill Parcells installed Tony Romo as the starter in 2007 the Cowboys defense has held 30 opponents to 17 points or less. The team has gone 25-5 in those games, including their only playoff win against the Eagles where the team held the Eagles to 3 points.
Flacco is an average QB at best but analyst like Jaws just don't seem to get it. Eli is a good QB but to be in the top 5 is insane. His defense has stepped up in both his playoff runs by allowing 6 or 8 playoff opponents to score 17 or less..Just so you know the other two games their opponents scored 20 once and 21 the other.
Only in the minds of low information fans and the media does a guy get moved to greatness by having a shut down defense and it also doesn't hurt that you have wide receivers make catches on basic Hail Marry's.
