#900 in da house/Signature win
Alright alright alright. With Matthew McCounaghay patrolling the sidelines, with a record crowd channeling their inner Mack Brow (arrive early, wear orange be loud), CTH and his crew pushed TEXAS into some rare air. 900 wins, only 2 other programs can make that claim, Michigan and tOSU with a resounding defeat of USC. And USC was also #800 as Mack Brown, Vince Young and company would turn in the greatest National Title performance in CFB history.
Now make no mistake, things go off to a pretty rough start as USC surged to a 14-3 lead behind the efforts of a pair of HS teammates and true freshmen. How many thinking, oh crap, here we go again. TEXAS answers with a double dose of Lil Jordan to cut the lead to 14-10, followed by a FG drive set up by Kris Boyd's INT. USC then responds with an 11 play 76 yard drive but with 1st and Goal at the 9, the TEXAS D bows up and records the DEFINING stop of the game, snuffing out USC's 4th and 1 try.
YUGE play, simply YUGE. At the least, this was the defining moment of the game but at best, it helps define the 2018 season. TEXAS would the take the lead as time ran out in the opening half and go up 16-14 on one of 3 Dicker 1st half FGs.
Through 2 games, the 2nd half has largely been CTH's undoing but against USC, TEXAS would dominate the 2nd half. Coach Todd's crew forced 4 punts including three times 3 and outs and on the lone 2nd half drive where USC threatened to score, Caden Sterns crashed through to block a FG try and Anthony Wheeler logged a scoop and score TD.
A dominating performance in all 3 phases of the game give CTH his "signature" win at TEXAS. Though it will not be TEXAS' only opportunity for a "sig win" this season. TCU comes to town this week followed by a trip to Manhatten (not a sig win opportunity but a tough place for the Horns to play) then it's the Red River War against the thieves of land. Enjoy the win today but let's not rest on any laurels as the road ahead is even tougher.
PROS
Team fed off the energy of the crowd and when it matter, they put their foot on USC's throat giving them no chance to get off the mat.
Special teams came through
Offense was 10-19 on 3rd down keeping drives alive, best performance of the season
Defense bowed up when it mattered most
Was that a running game we saw tonight? No spectacular but the RBs/OL pounded on USC
34-0 run. After being down 14-3, TEXAS would go on a 34 point run denying USC the chance to score
Offense regularly took shots down the field and when they hit, it paid off big
1st time this year we have seen a serious pass rush from the Horns.
D held USC to 6 of 15 on 3rd downs including 4 drives of 5 plays or less and punt.
CONS
Honestly not many
Early 14-3 hole was a concern but the 34-0 run eased that pain
4 punts for 36 yards average.
Sam passed for less than 50%. Part of that taking down field shots but he still seems to be out thinking things in the pocket. Having said that, Sam is clearly the man and he certainly was effective.
OVERVIEW
Simply a great win, the signature win of CTH's short tenure. Little time to enjoy, TCU on deck. This will be a tough test for the Horns but it is also a great chance to build on a win over AP ranked USC. Can the Horns couple the emotional high of this win with the Frogs coming into Austin hung over? Can Coach Patterson keep 1 loss from becoming 2?
