AUSTIN – After missing out on the NCAA tournament, Texas has accepted an invitation to play in this year’s NIT.
The No. 2 seed Longhorns will host No. 7 seed South Dakota State (24-8, 14-2 Summit) at the Erwin Center on March 19. If it wins, Texas would host the winner of No. 3 seed Xavier vs. No. 6 seed Toledo in the second round.
Texas last appeared in the postseason NIT in 1986, losing in the second sound to Ohio State. A Longhorns team featuring future Spur Johnny Moore defeated North Carolina St. in the 1978 championship game, the only time in four trips it has won the tournament.
Texas (16-16, 8-10 Big 12) will have to adjust to several experimental rules implemented for this year’s NIT. The four modifications that will go into effect are:
• The 3-point line will be extended by 1 foot, 8 inches to the same distance used by FIBA for international competition (22 feet, 1.75 inches).
• The free throw lane will be widened from 12 feet to 16 feet, consistent with the width used by the NBA.
• The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds.
• Team fouls will reset at the 10-minute mark of each half for the purpose of determining free throws and one-and-one free throws will be eliminated. Teams will shoot two bonus free throws after the fifth team foul of each 10-minute segment.
The NIT second round will be played from March 21-25. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday, March 26-27.
New York City’s Madison Square Garden will host the semifinals and title game on April 2 and 4, respectively.
