AUSTIN – Back in February, during a relatively low-key national signing day, Texas coach Tom Herman applauded the “courageousness” of Bru McCoy, a superb five-star athlete who transferred from USC amid unique circumstances.
“I applaud Bru and his courageousness to say, ‘Hey, this is not where my heart is, and I'm going to do something to change that,’” Herman said on Feb. 6. “He's obviously a very convicted kid to be able to do what he did in spite of all of the reasons for him maybe not to. He showed me a lot of fortitude in just that one thing that he did.”
But nearly five months after he enrolled early at USC, and about four months after he arrived on the Forty Acres, McCoy could again be ready to throw the college football world for a loop.
On Monday, Chris Trevino of USCfootball.com reported a homesick McCoy is considering a transfer back to USC. McCoy starred at Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and his family remains in southern California.
A source confirmed McCoy is having second thoughts about the decision to transfer from USC to Texas so abruptly, though he has not yet reached a decision and is his name is not in the NCAA transfer database.
McCoy is also still awaiting an NCAA waiver granting him eligibility for the 2019 season. A transfer back to USC after going through all of spring practice with Texas could further jeopardize his ability to play for any program this coming season.
The unexpected addition of McCoy bumped the Longhorns' 2019 recruiting class up to No. 3 in the nation, per the 247Sports composite.
