My turn- observations from the Alamo Bowl and other things

Well folks, this is the last of "My Turn" for the '13 season and let me just say that it couldn't have come soon enough IMHO. Remember the days of yore when if we went to the Alamo Bowl it was considered a bad season? Well in recent years our football program has basically set up permanent residency in San Antonio every December. Last night's game showed us EXACTLY why we need a change at the top of the Football Program. The University of Texas' Football Program is about to have a cleansing and at this point let me just say that is exactly what the doctor ordered. This season has been a strange one indeed. When you consider that we should have lost at Iowa State and we could have very easily lost at West Virginia, this team could have ended the season 6-7. Yet at the end of the day there was old Mack Brown holding his ground refusing to step-down. Thank you BMD's for stepping in and righting the ship or God only know how long we would circle the drain with Brown at the helm. On to observations:

1. Mack Brown really "screwed the pooch" on bringing Manny Diaz back as DC but do you want to know where else he "screwed the pooch?" Naming Major Applewhite as OC. After seeing an entire season of Major Applewhite as OC, I am not sure that he would make a decent OC at Angelo State. Major was clearly in over-his-head and Darrell Wyatt should have taken over play-calling duties half-way thru the season. It really does show you how far Mack's football acumen had fallen off in recent years by having Diaz & Applewhite at coordinator positions. How Mack doesn't see that is beyond me.

2. Malcolm Brown had 113 yards rushing in the first half. The guy seemed to be the one person on the offense determined to try to make a fight of it. Way to stay with your "bread & butter" Major. Nice job.

3. Mike Davis never became the receiver we had all wished he would become while in Austin. That is a shame.

4. Our defense gave up just 1 TD to an explosive Oregon squad. Let that resonate for a minute. Now, add 14 points to that total due to 2 Case McCoy pic 6's and the score becomes an embarrassment. Honest to God, that last pic 6 looked like Ozzy Smith bare-handing a soft hit into the infield and having to quickly flip the ball to first base for the out. Hell, I don't blame this on Case- this is the Coaching Staff's fault of us being in this situation in the first place.

5. I still believe Nick Saban will be the next HC at Texas. If not, I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh is the guy. Also, Fisher having NO buyout in his contract extension sure makes things interesting doesn't it?

6. Had Marcus Marriota not gotten nic'd up last night, that game could have been an embarrassment. Had the Baylor game been played in ideal conditions, that game would have been an embarrassment. I am just happy to see that we don't have to set our lives on hold any longer in waiting for Mack to get out our of collective football lives.

7. Jackson Jeffcoat & Cedric Reed had nice games last night. Jeffcoat played his ass of and deserves better than he got this season. Let's hope Ced Reed sticks around for another season.

8. Tyrone Swoopes does not remind me of Vince Young. He has a MUCH bigger arm than VY and doesn't throw like a girl like VY does. Tyrone Swoopes reminds me of Jamarcus Russell. Say what you want about Russell in the pros, but homey was a man in College at LSU.

9. I said this before and I'll say it again, I cannot wait for our next HC to come in and pull off all of the decals that don't pertain to the University of Texas (blue ribbons, yellow ribbons, whatever the cause du jour ribbon is AND that includes even old Glory!) and eliminate the clutter and get back to kicking ass on the football field. Enough of the pageantry. Enough of the noise. Enough of the clutter. Just run out of the tunnel onto the field and kick the $hit out of the other team!

10. I read where David Ash may be ready to go in the Spring. That is good news. With a decent coach we won't have to worry about the young man being put in consistently put in harm's way by an inexperience OC and a befuddled HC. If you'll notice, AJ McCarron doesn't get hit a whole lot when dropping back to pass the ball. Neither does Jameis Winston. Neither does Joe Flacco. All 3 of the aforementioned programs have coaches that believe in physical offensive lines to control the LOS.

11. If I were the next Head Coach at Texas I would look at retaining Searles, Porter, & Wyatt. The job Robinson has done as DC is nothing short of miraculous but I think it's time to go in a different direction. Everyone else can take a flying leap- yes that includes Akina as well!

12. I hope the next Head Coach at Texas hires a full-time Special Teams Coordinator. We can have a TE Coach at Texas but we can't have a Special Teams Coordinator. Is Bruce Chambers really that invaluable?!

13. Dalton Santos was all over the filed last night. So was Peter Jinkins.

14. We had an awful lot of injuries this season. I realize that Bennie Wylie has cleaned out his locker but as much as a proponent of Bennie as I was early-on, something doesn't jibe. It's time to go in a COMPLETELY different direction as it pertains to S&C.

15. I had thought that we could bring in a new Coach (say a Briles) and hit the ground running and be back in the National Championship picture by Year 2. At this point, I am of the belief that all the BS we heard about going after a different type of recruit (while missing out on other top recruits) is just that. Our talent level is NOWHERE NEAR where it was even back in '07. This rebuilding project may take some time.

16. I truly believe the days of us getting sand kicked in our face and not doing anything about it are over. Teams feed off of the Head man. If the Head Coach is complacent, so becomes the team. The team mimics its leader. The next leader at the University of Texas will not be complacent. Change is coming. Whether with Saban, Harbaugh, Fisher, or even Strong. Change is coming!

17. I understand that Swoopes got into a heated discussion with some of the Coaches prior to the Alamo Bowl. Can you blame the kid? The way his career has been handled in such a cavalier manner by the Coaching staff, if I were his dad I would have punched both Mack & Major in the face.

18. Jaxson Shipley had a poor game.

19. Anthony Fera was nails and will be sorely missed come next season.

20. I cannot wait for OU to roll around next season. For the first time since VY was at the helm, Stoops will actually face a coach that is on his level (if not surpasses his level) from an X's & O's standpoint.

In closing, this has been a brutal season. With the rise of Baylor & Aggy in the SEC, someone HAD to take the car keys away from grandpa and take him to the retirement home. We will no longer survive- we will THRIVE with the new Coaching Staff. Unfortunately football teams' success/failures are measured by the success of the QB. I have seen enough of David Ash to know that he doesn't have "it"! Perhaps that is due to $hitty coaching? I don't know. But if he (or any QB that we have on campus) step-up and be the man then we have a shot going into next season. By shot, I mean a chance to compete for the Conference Title. But let's not but the cart in front of the horse. Remember, even Saban had an embarrassing loss in year 1 before turning that program into the juggernaut it is today. Mack drove this thing into the ditch and it may take time to pull it out. We shall see.

Have a Happy & Safe '14!

Very good write up.........SG and all HornSports members have a Happy & Safe 2014.

Case looked like a six year old trying to throw a rock across a lake...no disrespect meant towards the six year olds.

Malcolm Brown was a man last night...then poof.

l agree with everything you wrote but your take on the talent level. UT did not lose a single game this year because the other team had more talent. Every game they lost or almost lost was a direct or indirect result of incompetent head coaching.

Excellent write up, SG. Very good points made.

A$M was 8-4 this year.

A failure versus expectations.

Giving Sumlin $5 million is like Texas and Mack.

Bidding against themselves.

Good writeup SG. I had been a long time fan of Major's but he's turned out to be a big disappointment. Imo they should have had some plays for Swoopes designed to get him to the edge such as a bootleg with pass option but it seemed qb draws were the only plays called for him. I'll always be a big fan of Major's attitude but at this time it's safe to say he needs more development.

Excellent post SG. You nailed it completely. I hate that we are where we are, but am so optimistic about the future.

P.S. Enjoyed the read.
You missed including the Echeese obligatory praise of Greg Davis.
LOL

Nice call out . .

GD is at Iowa if you didn't know and has little bearing on TEXAS anymore other than as a measuring stick of current production . ..

Based on on field performance. ..neither Harsin nor Major could carry GD's jock. . .simple reality .. .

Not sure why you want to tangent SG's thread or why you feel the need to call me out. . .

When you hire coordinators that could never be considered as your potential replacement, you are more concerned about keeping your job than you are about winning.

Exactly. HR101: Hire people with talent. If you hire incompetent subordinates, you're a crappy supervisor.

Actually, I liked Harsin better.

Actually, I liked Harsin better.
Of course you did. .

Not my point. ..it's not a popularity contest. .it's about results. .

I liked Mack. ..does change the fact that we were not on a Natty contention track. ..

Again. ..not the subject of this thread and I don't want to continue the hijack from the childish call out . .

Thought there were some good points raised and it will be the last game discussion for sometime. Always hate this time of year. . .God I love watching the Horns play. . .

To me, the Horns do not have an identity of who they are offensively. Pro style offense prior to VY, I think they fell into the zone read schemes with him but they had unbelievable talent. Colt McCoy was not the athlete VY was but he was gritty and a competitor. I don't understand at this point why they didn't go in this direction with the offense. Here we began to search of "who are we". Back to the Pro style, then the "SEC Ground Attack", Boise State Spread, and now with our current system. NO IDENTITY to me. Next, you gotta recruit athletes that you can develop into your schemes. Texas always has one of the best recruiting classes in the nation every year, but it hasn't translated into wins the past several years. This is where Briles to me does a heckuva job....the ability to RECOGNIZE talent for his SCHEMES. I bleed orange but this ENTIRE staff has struggled in all areas the past 4 years.
