Back in the early seventies, for a while I drove a Limo . One night I got a call to pick up a client at his hotel. It turned out to be George Jones. I was to drive him where he wanted to go, but to make sure he got to two places. Those placers were the "Big D Jamboree" and afterward to "The Longhorn Ballroom."
I picked him up late in the day before dark. We stopped at a liquor store, and he sent me in for a bottle of some liquor. I keep thinking it was Jack Daniels but am not sure. It has been over 40 years.
We drove around a couple of hours with him sucking on the Jack. We then went to the Big D Jamboree. It was down on Industrial where you old timers may remember the Sportatorium stood.(Is it still there?) I double parked and about 11:30 Jones came out toasted, and the Jack was nearly gone.
We went across the street to Dewey Grooms, Longhorn Ballroom, but he asked I park on the outside of the parking lot. He then proceeded to finish the bottle. They were quarts back then.
Back in 1970 the bars closed at midnight but were allowed to stay open until 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. It was a little after Midnight when I pulled up to the rear entrance. I had to leave the Limo because he needed help to get into the club.
If you know George you remember this song:

He got on the stage and nearly fell down several times. He started into this song and when he got to the part about "She thinks I still care," he substituted the words, "She thinks I'm a queer." He then started laughing and couldn't perform..People booed, and he waved and said, "thank you Dallas."
I took him to his hotel, and the evening was over. I can never listen to that song and not think of that night.
