Strong is going to see a level of schools he has never witnessed as a Head Coach. Massive difference between Big 12 and the lower remnants of the old Big East and CUSA.

Media will love this hire. That will get some good PR.

A&M is breathing a helluva lot easier now than they have for the last month.

I think Orgeron comes if he gets his 1M per year and is recruiting coordinator and DL coach. Maybe given Co-DC title as a perk. His family is is Louisiana and that helps the Longhorns chances.

I think this hiring process and hire has divided The Longhorn Nation.

Strong OWNED Miami recruiting for years due to the investigations into the Miami football program. Huge number of Cardinals from Miami and greater Miami area. Vast talent difference than rest of American Conference.

I can't see OU, Oklahoma St or Baylor being intimidated by this hire. Baylor is relieved. They now know that Briles is theirs.

I think Texas does this all over again in 4 years and Patterson will be long gone before then. OU has a dynamic young QB and a solid cast around him. Baylor and OSU tough. Not an easy road for Strong.

Not a UT grad. Grad of SEC school (not A&M or Bama). I expected much much more from the Longhorn leadership (particularly Patterson). It didn't happen.

Sumlin and Strong recruiting battles likely to be epic

Just expected more than Charlie Strong for this important hire

My opinions, nothing more

Very much enjoy the opinions of fellow posters and the efforts of the moderators

I agree completely, what an underwhelming hire. This is arguably the biggest college job and this is what we got? We talked a good game, $7 mil a year plus supposedly top 2 or 3 jobs in all of sports and we hired a itty bitty splash hire. Awful, he is in over his head.

Glad to see you're a glass half full type of guy.

Do you know for a fact that he is in over his head? If so what is your basis for this evaluation.

I just don't think anyone can make that kind of definitive statement yet.

The unbridled optimism of not being realistic as the world changed around us has been our problem.

The silver lining is that Strong HAS to know he wasn't most of our first choice. In most cases he was not seriously considered at least by the fan base. Hopefully that drives him and that hunger is passed to the players. He is going to have to do more with less immediately or be vilified, even though that isn't his fault. Hell, I can hardly believe it. Humble Pie all around.

I agree with the OP. Pretty much sums up my thoughts. Looking at those two schedules is underwhelming for sure. Strong maybe a good coach and I hope he is great as the last four years have been disappointing for this 25 year season ticket holder. Not sure why I should look at this hire any different than I did AnMs post Slocum hires and thus why this hire would be seen as a big deal to anyone not looking through burnt orange colored glasses.

What would the Horns have looked like this year with a defensive minded HC and Bridgewater under center? Texas is NOT that far from being great again and this guy can hold his own recruiting. Maybe we'll pick up some Florida talent to mix with that in our back yard. I would much rather have a hungry coach on the rise than some safe hire who has peaked. It's been a long time since I've seen any heart out of a Texas team too. I like where this is headed. No risk -- no reward.

Disagree with almost everything here.

That aggy is "breathing easier" - who cares? They're aggy. And why would they be breathing easier? I'm guessing Charlie Strong is going to recruit like a madman and be a great representative for the University of Texas. Sumlin's job just got a lot tougher - something you mention late in your post. 'Epic recruiting battles' does not mesh with aggy 'breathing easier.'

If Texas does this again in 4 years, it'll be because Strong's success sends him to the NFL, not because he fails here. To fail at Texas requires an epic collapse. Witness MBTF post-2009 for epic collapse examples.

We aren't privy to Patterson's inner-workings. There are rumors about who was 1 and 1A and 1B, but who knows? How many guys have been the supposed new coach over the past week? Five? Patterson knows the importance of this hire and you can bet he got the best guy he could. This is his legacy at his alma mater, after all.

Strong fought for the job. He wanted this job. Do we really want someone who has to be money-whipped into accepting the job? I don't. Just as they tell recruits, be here because you want to be here.

The coordinators who come long will be telling, but to me, this is a damn good hire.

Hook 'em.

HC or not, he's seen a higher level of schools during his time in the SEC. Not to mentioned that his defense owned Bob Stoops and Kevin Wilson's highest scoring offense in the 08' MNC game. Charlie is the real deal. He's not a big splash but he'll bring the culture change we've all wanted for our program. I'm starting to be more and more thankful that this wasn't a glitz & glam hire.

Sumlin and Strong will engage in some epic recruiting battles. Saban would crush Sumlin on the recruiting trail.
