While everyone is out on the beaches and lakes enjoying themselves lets not forget to thank those that are serving and have served for us.  Without you all none of this would be possible.

Here's to hoping everyone has a great/safe Memorial Day weekend!

Thank you for your service in Vietnam, Duke, and thank you for sharing those poignant images.

The statue at the Marine Corps Memorial at Arlington is actually a copy.  The original is in Brownsville at the Marine Military Academy.  The reason it was not used at Arlington is that it was judged to be too small, which is an echo of the story of the famous photograph it was modeled after.  The flag that was originally planted on the summit of Mount Suribachi was replaced by a larger one because a senior officer who saw the first flag raising from the beach demanded that a larger flag be used for the official photo.  By the way, if y'all haven't seen them, make sure you see the two movies Clint Eastwood made about Iwo Jima - Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.  Both are terrific.

actually, no, that is not what is about.

Memorial Day honors those who were killed during their service. Veterans' Day is what you are thinking of.
