The problem is that the aggy marketing group can spin the living crap out of this and use it to excite recruits while the team "supporting" Coach Strong is more concerned with not making things difficult for Kevin Sumlin than they are about making things easier for Charlie Strong. Once again, the ags will beat the crap out of Coach Strong's message with image. Chavis' move will unquestionably lead to some de-commits (at least from LSU) over to aggy. That gives Sumlin momentum to use with guys like Daylon Mack. Sumlin has proven he can run an offense. Chavis has proven he can run a defense. Texas is still trying to dig itself out of an image of a program that can't get a coin flip right and put up fewer yards against the worst team in the SEC west than did Nicholls State, Northern Illinois or UAB.
Thankfully, the dead period lasts until Jan 15, so there is a period where we can gauge the response of prospects to the new aggy DC (if it comes through). I'd be more comfortable with competition of we had a better record as of late in dealing with it. Coach Strong needs some momentum to build on. This season seems to have been two steps forward, two steps back, one step forward, two steps back.
If you don't think the aggy marketing team is going to use the hiring of John Chavis beat the hell out of any message Bellmont has in mind to support Charlie Strong, you are nuts. Charlie is our Winston Churchill in May of 1940. We aren't even at the end of the beginning. The best we can hope for is to pray for LSU to whip out their checkbook.
