Hope this is OK, we host a weekly lunch in Dallas which has been going on for close to 20 years now. .  . . this week we had Jeff Howe from 24/7 as our guest (yes. . .the Horn Sports crew have invites and we're working on dates).

Thought I would share some thoughts. . . .

Pick a Malcom Brown but enjoy this year.. . both are likely gone to next year's draft. . .DT MB can be a 1st rounder with a good year.

Gray maybe back by fall but there is a group who thinks he should shirt . .. with his surgeries and this injury. . .another guy likely to jump early. .. .

Staff loves the Front 4 on D. . .like everywhere on the team. . .wants more depth. . . .the staff wants to use people situation-ally. . . .but that is a problem in an uptempo league. . .

OL .. .loves the 3 on the interior. . . loves the potential of the tackles .. . .

Marcus Johnson is a prototype CS/Watson WR. . . .superior talent, hard worker, goes to class and has his head on straight. . .Sanders isn't quite where they want. . . . Montreal appears to be a steal with huge upside. . . .Shipley is Shipley. . .almost taken for granted he's so good.

WR recruting   Newsome from Aledo is their #1 instate WR (slot) target and they feel great about him. . . .staff thinks Burt is a real option and comes to TEXAS. . . .there is one other guy who's name I missed and they likely take those 3.

They may stop with Gentry and target 2 in 2016 . . .. June QB camp (3 days) will be big time in terms of evaluations and how many QBs they take each year. .

Recruiting going better than many realize right now.

Gentry needs a year to shirt which is perfect as chances Heard doesn't shirt are running strong today. . . .I love Ash but we'll be holding our breath on every play with him.

2015 will be a big class. . .

Basketball ..

Myles Turner is likely a 2 year guy .. . and might be the 6th man this year. .. ..BBall should be very good for the next 2 years. . . .

Don't be shocked to see a change on the diamond this offseason. . .

Random thoughts as I recall them. . . .

PS,

Not from Jeff but from another "source' (in this case a very good one). . . Kyle Murray might be leaning to Oregon but it's worried about recruiting. .

Totally focused on going undefeated and winning state .. . which would be amazing....3 straight undefeated state champs. . . .

Thanks Echeese

I appreciate hearing input from different sources because "I am the only person I know that is unbiased (sarcasm)".  The more input we receive causes us all to be better informed.

I hope you continue updating your weekly meetings.

Thanks, echeese.  Great information.  I don't make anybodies decisions about what can and cannot be said, but if 247 does not swear your to double dog dare secrecy, what Howe says to you or in a group is free game as far as I am concerned.  And, of course, you are attributing your source.

What he is saying about Myles Turner agrees with my thinking.  He is a phenomenal get for Coach Barnes and the team, but we have to remember, he has not played as along as some of the other guys in his class.  Just imagine how disconcerting it will be for our opponents with his coming off the bench at the five or six minute mark.  Yeah!  Disconcerted!  That's what they will be!  Why, they might even want to take their gudgeons and go home!  Yeah!  That's the ticket!  ;)

While it would be great to have Myles for two years, history shows he will be one and done. As long as Myles has a good year, he will be at least a top 10 pick and probably a top 5 pick. The quicker you get into the NBA, the quicker you can get to your second contract which is the big contract.

You are right for all practical purposes, but some do stay a little longer.  He is a young basketball player who got his growth late.  In interviews, both he and his parents seem that they might put a little different emphasis on how long he might stay in college, wether because of physical maturity issues, or wanting him to mature in college a little more, or maybe both.  I gotta say, though, that the opportunity to go after one year. if he were a lottery pick, or even a first round pick, would be hard to turn down for anybody.  The good thing is that we get to speculate and watch and see what happens.  Even if he goes after one year, seems to me that we look to still be pretty good the following year.

echeese, much obliged as per these weekly jeff howe segments.   i find them enlightening, intriguing, as well as thought provoking.  props to you for sharing!

Great input cheese.

Did not understand your last statement about Murray and Oregon. Worried about recruiting?

That was from a friend of the family. . .Murray isn't worried about recruiting, he's focused on an undefeated 3 peat.for Allen . .

Oregon, Aggie and Auburn are the leaders today. . . .don't be shocked if he goes out of state. . .Dad is hands off and not pushing aggie. . .frankly Oregon or Guz. . .offenses that fit him better. . .

Apparently Oregon is experiencing a QB exodus right now.  Jake Rodrigues and Damion Hobbs are reportedly transferring, leaving the cupboard relatively bare behind Mariota.  Hard to see Murray going anywhere but Aggie but Oregon would afford him a real shot at playing sooner rather than later if these transfers are going down.

Also Damion Hobbs played high school ball at Cedar Hill HS and was a 3-star qb in the class of 2013 (he's 6-3, 230).  He played in the Class 5A Division II State Championship against Katy in 2013.  Hobbs will make a nice QB for some coach/team.  Good player with a lot of heart.
