This quote is what's interesting, "He certainly offers several of them, but perhaps he only intends to grab a one or two of the big guys who will end up as nose-tackles. After all, Texas’ DL includes only three true DL positions even in the base 4-3 Under package and two of those positions are DE/DT hybrid spots that don’t require a bigger body."

I'm thinking Strong actually wants a more athletic DT than a big body.

That's what I've been thinking as well. He may be in the process of dumping the old $EC mentality as he's having to face more spread offenses in the B12... and pretty soon all the other conferences. Even ol' Waterfall @ bammy decided to open up his offense to some degree last season after crying about the spread the season before.

Charlie's not afraid of experimentation and change when needed. I think he and Bedford will be copied by a lot of programs in the very near future.

This also gives me great hope for our offense. I still don't think Norvell and Traylor were hired just for their position and/or recruiting acumen - they're both very familiar with spread schemes. Traylor probably has the best grasp of all as he has proved to spread the spread to accommodate the variety of talent he's had on hand from year to year. They don't get to recruit kids in high school (at least they're not supposed to), so Traylor, wisely, would adjust his scheme accordingly. I would not be surprised in the least if our offense isn't producing after the 4th game this coming season, Charlie brings Watson down to the sidelines and sends Traylor to the booth.

its understandable that we may not be able to out recruit the Oregons, Baylors and Aggys for offensive skill guys with how bad our offense has been lately, but......It will be very disturbing if Texas can't land a couple of top notch DTs. We are in desperate need of them since we lost the only one we signed from last years class. With Charlie's defensive prowess, and the fact we would have early playing time available; it would appear something isn't right in Denmark if we can't nab a 4 or 5 star or two. Rankings aren't perfect, but Bama does pretty well with all their 5 star guys they get. I'd rather miss on a 5 star than miss on a 3....

We landed Chris Warren, Ryan Newsome, John Burt Kirk Johnson and Kai Locksley last year

We currently have the #1 ranked QB in the state, Collin Johnson and Reggie Hemphill and are in good position to land more

Let's not get to hyperbolic. . . .but it is going to be a LONG off season.

The article makes a great deal of sense. . .of course I opined earlier this year that our top DTs often do not arrive as DTs. . . so I think the IT author is "brilliant". . . . .seriously, he made some excellent observations. . . .we are not a tradition 4-3 D.

Godz, you're not suggesting Charlie let Traylor call plays are you ? We already have TWO doing that; and that is one too many.

Thinking like this always cracks me up. . .

Conclusion: Watson sucks

Therefor any success we have will be due to a 3A HS coach's inclusion with the staff. . . and he'll have such an impact he'll leap frog not just Watson but Wick and Norvell . .. .

All facts will be "massaged" to fit pre-determined conclusion .. .

echeese, I am not suggesting our offensive hauls are dog meat. I'm merely saying until our offense start to look good, we can't expect to out recruit the high flying offenses, but we should be able to out recruit for defensive players. If not there is something wrong.

echeese, I guarantee you there are many high school coaches who can coach rings around MANY college coaches. You think ALL coaches at whatever level are better than those at lower levels ? I'm not saying I agree with Godz, but ....hey Traylor MAY be better than Watson and Wickline.........69 yards with a month to prepare ?? SMH ....You don't have to be too great to do better than that. LOL

As a general rule. . . yes.   "All" of course not, there will ALWAYS be exceptions to the rule.

Though I do understand there is a huge "good ole boy" element to coaching too.

But generally, ADs (HS and college) or HC's looking to beef up their staffs are always trying to cull good talent.  And the cream rises to the top.

I hate to burst bubbles but #1 reason we hired Traylor was to recruit East Texas. . . .and the most valuable coaching he'll add is likely organizing practices. . which is a valuable commodity in a limited # of practices world.

BTW, Gilmer is a 3A program which generally sees anywhere from 3-6 D1 ships a year. . . there is likely not another 3A school that can make such a claim.   Parents in East Texas move to Gilmer for their boys to play/be showcased. . . .just like parents in D/FW relocate to Desoto or Allen or Southlake.

But in Gilmer's case, they do in fact win a great many games out talenting teams.

PS,

I told everyone before the Arkansas game we likely could not have drawn a worse matchup. . . .in fact I"m not sure there wasn't 1 position group we were superior to Pigs. .. . .we lost because we were outmatched and Guz Malzahn could not have coached us up to a significantly better result.

And I'll call it now, Pigs contend for the SEC west this year. . . .. this year's Miss St/Ole Miss

echeese, I was kinda tongue in cheek about the Arky game, thus the LOL at the end. Traylor may actually be able to help Watson with the spread offense. We shall see. I hope Charlie can fix this program and get it back to a national contender.
