This thread is mainly to start the thread in the football forum but also to express optimism for the 2nd year starter. Hopefully the acquisition of Harsin from Boise State (along with Applewhite) will ignite a much-needed spark in the offense this year.

Pretty sure GG will start the season as the starter, but the question is will he play better (OK, A LOT BETTER) and be the starter at the end of the year?

Gilbert gets the benefit of the doubt but we will have multiple qbs playing mid season. Guarantee it.

I have seen nothing from the kid to give me a good feeling about him. He just seems to make huge mistake after huge mistake and worse he seems to not care.

Sorry for being so negative in my first post but Gilbert is a huge problem..IMHO

I would ask what the alternative is? Gilbert has the experience and could have simply had a bad year. Skinny Chase McCoy, Connor Brewer, David Ash... All newbies that do not give Texas a better chance to win...

Plus the dude did AMAZING against Bama in the Championship game two seasons ago. He has the skill and the pedigree.

Not saying there is an alterantive but young Gilbert looks like a coach killer to me. I hope I am wrong because I bleed orange but I just don't see anything there but another Chris Simms.

BTW..anyone know what is wrong with my profile picture and signature. Both show up in my profile settings but I see nothing when I post..

Gilbert has a half season and then they throw in the young guns if he starts sucking it up. A bit early to label him a Chris Simms - he has a lot of playing time left to fill those shoes. You have to select Avatar, I believe instead of profile pic.

I still think Gilbert starts and if he looks like crap against Rice and or BYU, he's probably finished and the Case McCoy era will begin. Based on what I saw in the Spring Game, McCoy looks more suited to lead the team and they seem to respond better to him. Time will tell.

I have a hard time grasping the idea of throwing Gilbert to the curb after a few bad games, but you never know. I do know that Mack does not have several season to "get it right." Texas is a win AND win now program. It would be great to see Gilbert pan out. Chase McCoy might transfer if GG has too much success - he has already toyed with the idea.

Time for the defense and the running game to step up. Gilbert needs to not be put in a position where he has to win the game. Manage the game and take what comes. He has the tools, he just needs to be coached.

AGREED totally on the coaching statement. Greg Davis had a life extension when Vince guided the Horns to a National Championship in 2005. THe Harsin/Applewhite due should make him a better player. Fozzy, CJ and the newcomer Malcolm Brown should spice it up in the backfield as well. Let's get the season started!

Just to back up my thoughts of Gilbert, I just read where he is the 8th rated QB in a 10 team league. Not good..

I read that also but honestly the jury is still out on Garrett Gilbert. Remember what the media and fans were saying after the Texas/Alabama National Championship game? He has played one, only one full season as the starter at The University of Texas. Difference this year is that he hears the footsteps of Chase McCoy or David Ash. We know McCoy is a legacy guy and has the potential but Ash is an underrated qb who enrolled early at UT to acclimate himself to the program. GOOD KID.

Anyways, I see these preseason conference rankings and see UT hovering around 5-7 in most of them. I say GOOD. Better to be underrated than over - that's for sure. We'll show them what we're made of....

Colt McCoy ripped the current Longhorn squad for a horrible 5-7 season last year. He says it was unacceptable. What I say is unacceptable is how he went out in that Rose Bowl! I love the guy but come on bro, don't be the transcendent qb.. The guy who is above it all now. The 'horns had a bad year, plain and simple. They are allowed one every so often, right?

I just read an article on the scrimmage and Gilbert was abysmal..According to the article he looked lost, only made one first down and threw (2) interceptions..They also said he had bad body language and hung his head a lot..

Meanwhile David Ash was great..He threw the ball like a frozen rope and had good command of the huddle..Case McCoy had trouble with throwing a spiral..Once again I didn't see the scrimmage but if this report is correct Gilbert may not start against Rice..

I don't think the Texas staff know yet who will start against Rice. I wouldn't mind seeing Ash trot out on the field. Hell, would give him some confidence beating up on the Owls. McCoy has been hot and cold but he hasn't had his opportunity to show if he can cut the mustard during game time. If Gilbert still has the deer-in-the-headlights affliction they might need to sit him.

Ash is receiving all of the press this week praising his hard-nose attitude and poise. Looks like he has earned the respect of his teammates too, which is 3/4 of the battle. That's the leadership Mack Brown was looking for several weeks ago - I hope he starts against Rice. One heartbeat.....

UT may not have a choice. If Gilbert is anything like the guy I watched last season and in the Orange/White game, he will have no choice. I think his confidence has been shattered and losing receivers on a daily basis hasn't helped. Malcom Brown better get ready for a lot of work.
