Texas Will Face Motivated Mississippi State Team

Last year’s 35-14 win over the Bulldogs by the Longhorns marked the program’s first SEC victory and gained a 3-2 edge in the all-time series, which started in 1921 with a 54-7 win by Texas in Austin.

The Texas Longhorns have struggled their way to a 2-1 start during SEC play amid a tough away-from-home stretch in the month of October.

After scraping past Kentucky in a 16-13 overtime win in Lexington, Texas will stay on the road once again and head to Starkville on Saturday for a matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, making it the second straight game that the Longhorns will face an opponent that's winless in SEC action.

The conference released the broadcast and kickoff details for the game following the Longhorns' win over Kentucky, and it's clear that the SEC is prioritizing other matchups on the schedule.

Texas and Mississippi State will kick off at 3:15 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on SEC Network.

Mississippi State secured an impressive win over then-No. 12 Arizona State during non-conference play but dropped a tough 41-34 overtime loss to the then-No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers. The Bulldogs then suffered a 31-9 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies before Saturday's 23-21 loss in Gainesville to a reeling Florida Gators team.

Given the recent results, there's no doubt that the Bulldogs will be a highly-motivated bunch headed into Saturday's matchup in Starkville. Mississippi State has lost a few close games and could be on the brink of breaking through, especially against a Texas team that has shown major flaws on offense.

Texas played its inaugural game as a member of the SEC last season in Austin against Mississippi State, which also marked Arch Manning's second-career start.

The Longhorns were far from perfect but came away with a 35-13 win in what is still the best game Manning has played during his time at Texas. He finished 26 of 31 passing for 325 yards, two touchdowns and no picks along with six carries for 33 yards and another score.

He showed a nice connection with wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr., who had four catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Additionally, Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner had 13 carries for 88 yards and one catch for 12 yards.

The Longhorns will need similar performances from this trio in order to move past the offense struggles against Kentucky and secure a second straight SEC road win to move to 3-1 in conference.

Guess I drank way tooo much orange Kool-Aide, but thinking the ou Texas team shows up this week and Texas extends its SEC win streak. For some reason, under Sark’s leadership, Texas plays with a big hangover after the ou game.

I wish I had your optimism. Here's where I am.... this is a bad team. When you consider that we were #1 in preseason polls, it is a bad and extremely disappointing team. It is amazing that we sit at 5-2. I wouldn't be surprised to see us lose this week.

For all you old-timers, this team reminds me of the 1991 Longhorns under David McWilliams. 1 year after the "shock the nation tour" where we went 10-2 counting a Cotton Bowl loss to Miami... This very good season was followed by a 5-6 campaign. The similarity is this... that 1991 team had a tremendous defense loaded with NFL talent. The DL was Shane Dronett, James Patton, Tommy Jeter and Bo Robinson just to give you a taste. But the offense was so dreadfully inept that the great defense was neutralized.

I hope that Sark has it within himself to honestly evaluate what went wrong in the offseason. His offense just doesn't work like it once did. Why? I'm not sure... perhaps it's too complicated?? It routinely takes #1 HS QBs and make them look rather pedestrian. Whatever the case may be... we're approaching historically bad numbers this year. I have a hunch that if you took Kendal Briles (just a random example) out of TCU and put him in as QB Coach and offensive coordinator, this team has dramatic improvement overnight. Rather than that I guess - one sacrificial offensive coach will be let go after this year and we will get more of the same going forward. More of the same inability to score from inside the 5 yard line, more of the same consistent illegal procedure penalties and more of the same regular holding penalties.

Sark has done great things as head coach at Texas.... but not as the OC. I certainly hope there is a deep dive to find out what went wrong this year. But I have my doubts.

Then again.... maybe we run the table and make a deep playoff run. I'll be happy to eat a healthy helping of crow if that is the case.

Adding to the above two posts, Texas better be ready to play. The Mississippi State coach is Jeff Lebby. Make no mistake, he hates Texas. He is Art Briles' son-in-law. He coached at Baylor during Briles' dark tenure. He coached at Oklahoma. He hates Texas.

Speaking of a hangover after playing Oklahoma, one of the forgotten greatness of Darrell Royal was that he played Oklahoma and Arkansas in back-to-back weeks - and won. In addition to playing heated rivals, many times both rivals were nationally ranked.

It seems like this was the case going into the 90s? I seem to remember back to back wishbone games (OU then Arkansas) in the 80s / early 90s??

I agree about similarities of 91 team ,but afraid Sark is arrogant and will force feed offense try to prove he is right. It will take two things,(1) someone higher gives him ultimatum to get OC (2) fire him. Rather #1 happen

The Briles name has certainly taken a hit. But I'll say this... I'd take a Briles student as an OC any day. Lebby runs a form of the Briles offense. Remember Sterlin Gilbert (OC under Chuck Strong), he is from the Briles tree. It is like the run and shoot spread offense, with a power running element thrown in. Right now I'd walk to wherever Sterlin Gilbert is to bring him back to Austin.

This game was full of firsts.... 1st time I've ever seen 3 illegal procedures on a punt team.
No kidding!

Reminds me of the lines from the movie, "Birdcage."

Armand:
Al, you old son of a b*tch! How ya doin'? How do you feel about that call today? I mean the Dolphins! Fourth-and-three play on their 30 yard line with only 34 seconds to go!

Albert:
How do you think I feel? Betrayed, bewildered...

Summary:
You know your team is playing horribly when you reference lines from Birdcage to how they are playing. 🙄 LOL

Here is my fear.

I wonder to myself whether or not Sark understands how badly this team is playing and how badly Arch has played.

He once pulled Quinn Ewers out for a spell during one of QE's worst games. That doesn't happen with Arch and I wonder why.

Doing so causes a QB controversy, but that isn't as important as wins.

I actually have a David McWilliams autographed football. Same for Royal as well.

I have checked the betting lines. Texas is a 6.5 - 7 point favorite. The bookies either know something that I don't or didn't see the game that I saw. Perhaps they are more analytical and not as emotional. That is why I don't bet. I will stick with iron condor (options).
