I watched the local KHOU news this mourning and they ran a story about a large apartment complex that is going up next to Magnolia Cemetery. I pretty familiar with that cemetery and have even toured it, to check all the famous names buried there. The story about the new complex was startling regarding how close the actual building was to actual graves. In many cases the new structure would be less than two feet from actual gravestones. Just horrible judgement on the builders part. Besides, what kind of person would want to live in a place where you have your mourning coffee within feet of real graves?

Anyway I saw the story and thought, jeeez, some crazy person might try to torch that new complex before it's finished. If it doesn't get sabotaged, I bet they have a hard time selling the units near the cemetery. That's what went through my head.

So I go to the Med Center to have a little procedure done and my wife is driving me back to Katy afterward. We head up Montrose to hit I10 and out to Katy. As we pass the Magnolia Cemetery I look over toward where the new apartment complex is and...... It's GONE! Burned! To the freaking ground!

At first I thought, oh, anesthesia hasn't worn off and I'm hallucinating. But I took a second look. Yup, someone did torch the place.

It's really bothered me because I even kinda envisioned the place burning when I saw the story on KHOU this mourning.

Chilling.

I realize this was a typo, but it really made me laugh!

Interesting issue. Houston was the last major city in the US of A to adopt anything resembling modern zoning codes. Hence in decades past, you were just as likely to find a dead animal rendering plant for the production of dog food across the street from the entrance to a high end gated residential neighborhood as you are to find a Starbucks in such a location today. I guess some attitudes are slow in changing.

In some cities, New Orleans, for example, cemeteries are considered just another part of the urban landscape. In many cities around the world, people use cemeteries much as they would a city park - you know, lunch and reading on a park, er, cemetery bench, stretching your legs while walking the dog, and such as that. In fact, urban cemeteries in cities around the world were some of the first examples of urban green space and parks being incorporated into the urban landscape ... but I guess it does bring new meaning to that pesky situation where your dog gets loose in the park, er, cemetery and turns up with a bone that he just dug up! ;)

Here is an interesting link on the New Orleans cemeteries ... Funny aside - when I went back and checked to make sure this link was working correctly, there was a strip ad at the top of the page that read, "Experience New Orleans! ' Book Now, Check in, Date, Nights(number), Rooms(number) GO! ;) Reminds me of one time when I was driving around in a fairly poor neighborhood in San Antonio, I turned at an intersection and nearly ran off of the street when I saw a sign on a business in a strip center that read, Funerals, Cremations, Urns, and Beyond! You cannot make this stuff up! ;)

And, here are some great cemetery images ...
