In many ways. . .the game mirrored the season. ..certainly some impressive performances to go with some serious downturns. . in the end. . we could not match Oregon's talent. . .their execution on offense . . .and we lost the turnover battle. . .in ugly fashion.
Greg Robinson was amazing this year. . .his D was certainly amazing last night . ..held Oregon to 16 points. ..4-12 on 3rd down. . .yes. . .gave up a ton of yards. ..largely who cares.. winning is about scoring. The claim was we'd be boat raced. ..it was clear early on that wouldn't be the case. . .
OK. . .in fairness. ..had they not scored on the INTs they likely score anyway but that still means our D only gave up 30 without any support from the offense other than Malcom Brown.. .
Malcom Brown and our Offensive Line. . .put up some great stats but in the end. .the lack of an effective run/pass balance turned us into a one dimensional team. . . .good news. . Case had 2 TD passes. . .bad news both to the Ducks .
After an outstanding 1st quarter . .16 play. .79 yard TD drive the 2nd quarter starts and we begin a string of six 3/4 and outs. .(I don't count the 2 play drive before half) where we saw our supposed stars fail us left and right. . .Case had 2 long TD passes where the ball wasn't anywhere near open WRs. ..but then when they got open (Davis Ship Swaim) . .dropped balls killing drives. . . .I loved Major finally realizing he actually can call a pass to a TE . ..but maybe he didn't because Swaim can't catch a cold.. .love his blocking though. ..
Which makes me wonder. . .why were we not using McFarland or John Harris in the "Big WR/pass catching TE" role during the year when we went 4 wide? Create a mismatch with a DB. . .Harris made some great plays but vanished.
The most frustrating part of the night was our failure to E-X-E-C-U-T-E . ..so much more important than scheme or even talent though in contrast. ..I saw an Oregon team with both talent and execution . ..Mariotta is an amazing QB. . .the contrast was stark. . .his WRs made the tough catches . .hung onto the ball taking the big shots. . .if Mariotta can stay healthy. .Oregon is a excellent early contender for the 2014 national title. . .Pac 12 going to be good next year.
You cannot ask a D to pitch a shut out to win though . ..end of the night the lose was on us. . .on TEXAS' failure to sustain drives and score. .. .our D showed up. ..4 Oregon drives ended with FG attempts along with 4 forced punts. . .
Was good to see Tshiro Davis, Leroy Scott and Tyrone Swoopes get extended play. . .is Swoopes the answer? Don't know. .he certainly had some flashes . ..my #1 question (after a discussion with a friend) .. .does he have Vince's work ethic? Will he take the reigns? We'll see. ..
Mack's last game. . ..
There is an expression in business that fits Mack to a tee . ..you are either growing or dying .. .Mack "took his foot off" the pedal after the title game. . .the momentum of our success along with an outstanding find of Colt McCoy (thank you Greg Davis) lead us back to the title game in 2009. . .where an injury to Colt cost us a real shot at a 2nd ring . ..but after years of great QB play from Major to Simms to Vince to Colt . ..the worst of the bungling was ultimately the undoing. . .GJ Kinne was allowed to transfer after we went all in on John Chiles who was a talented athlete who'd rather play pick up basketball. ..a decision to make GG "the man" contributed to letting talents like Andrew Luck and RG III get away. . .
the other side of the coin. . .using 2009 as the end of a 10 year run. . .TEXAS had not enjoyed as much on field success as we had seen since the decade of the 60's and DKR's glory years . . .
And sadly. . .how different is Mack thought of today if not for 3 one-play games. ..CU II in Dallas, the Crabtree Miracle and Colt being injuried in the 2009 title game. . . granted. .all coulda/shoulda/woulda's but that is 2 more Natty's Mack plays for with a better than average chance of winning at least one. ..that close. . .one play. . .
To quote Tuna (Bill Parcells). . .you are what you are . ..and Mack is what he is. ..he restored the luster of TEXAS football . .he has set the standard for the next coach . .he's re-set TEXAS after 30 years of mediocrity as a National power. . ..but he is gone for one simple reason . ..we are no longer on a rising track. . .we are no longer a National title contender ..
Who's NEXT? Don't know. . .too much smoke for the Cheap Seats to even venture a guess. . . . .

As good a corps of RBs in the nation and some very impressive young WRs on offense
An outstanding DL. .some very good DBs . ..
