Business 101 reason why Mack Brown will NOT be back in '14 and other things..

Y'all-

I've been spending a lot of time in North Carolina and Virginia the last 2 weeks and talking to UNC Alumni about the Browns. I must say that going back to Mack & Sally's back yard has been "enlightening" about the way they are perceived back home. More on that later.

Recently I've been reading on different boards where some of the "less informed" followers of the program are concerned about "what if Mack runs the table then the higher-ups cave to Mack's demands and let him coach in '14?" To those folks I say this: we have had people (IMG and others) reaching out to college coaches, pro coaches, former coaches broadcasting MNF, and their agents about this job. Even if Mack runs the table and plays in a BCS Bowl Game, after all of these inquiries, after all of the conversations behind the scenes with agents, do you REALLY think the University of Texas will bring Mack back for another season?

Do you have ANY idea how badly that could damage our brand? As a University, we would look like a bunch of idiots. Guys like Saban, Carroll, Meyer, Tomlin, Gruden, and anyone else you could name would tell us when we came around again to "pucker up!" Despite the clown show that has been going on recently, that is not our modus operandi. We just don't do things that way. Say what you want about the current state of our Athletic Department but when it comes to business we don't f@ck around!

At the end of the day it seems the ONLY person that doesn't realize it's over (and I believe he knows it's over deep down) is Mack Brown. Everywhere I go around the country I am being asked about who is going to replace Mack. Those that are educated fans always ask me, "is it true that Saban is going to Texas?" My response is that I feel VERY good about it. And to a person they feel that it would be the ideal fit for everyone- as do I!

I spoke to several UNC, Duke, UVa, Clemson, & Va Tech Alumni over the past couple of weeks during my travels. I must admit, after getting to meet these people in the ACC I don't think that you can meet a nicer group of folks as a whole and if I had my druthers, and the if the SEC truly is not an option, with their mix of success in football, basketball, baseball, AND academics I believe the ACC would be an IDEAL place for us to land. They KNOW their Football just like the SEC folks do but are much more gentile about it. There is no in-your-face bravado with these folks like you see in the SEC! Before I go any further, let me just state that the information that I am now sharing is not my opinion of Mack and Sally Brown. What IS being shared are the opinions of some really nice, educated, neat people that I got to speak with while traveling throughout Virginia and North Carolina over the past couple of weeks on business. Now that the legal disclaimer is complete, back to Mack & Sally.

Eventually while talking to these folks the topic of College Football would come up. Inevitably these folks would know I was from Texas and consistently I was asked about Mack's status (which I quickly learned was actually an entre on their part to voice their displeasure with Mack!). At the end of the day, I was expecting the UNC Alumni to be upset with Brown- and they were. Hell, I would even call it sour grapes. But how it was positioned to me consistently to a person was that Mack boldly lied not only to the press about his intentions to take the UT job (which I completely understand and is part of business and even they did as well), but they also lied to close friends, fellow members of their church, and country club as well. Still, I understand that to a degree. Business is business. I get it.

Then things got even more interesting. Despite all of the stories that we've been told about her success in real estate, Sally is perceived by the UNC faithful as a "power-hungry, manipulative, money-hungry bitch" that found out who Mack was, realized that was her meal ticket to the good life, zero'd in her sites on her target, and got her ticket stamped when she & Mack married. And as any smart business person would do, she would use her new-found celebrity to her advantage from a business standpoint- to which I say GOOD FOR HER! In turn, Mack was referred to as a "fertilizer salesman with a mouth full of samples." The description of Mack was echoed by all of the alumni I spoke with no matter what their University affiliation was. Ahh, the South!

So perhaps at the end of the day, Mack DOESN'T want to go back to North Carolina after all? I didn't see that he would receive much of a warm welcoming if he and Sally did return to North Carolina. Perhaps going out to a Hero's parade and remaining in Austin afterwards is indeed a better ending for Mack than going out in a pine box and having no place to go?

Interesting stuff. I had no idea that's how they felt in North Carolina.

It's just way past time for Mack.

Very good post Santa. Some interesting info.

However, if Dodds were still around I don't think a change would be coming. Until a new AD is here and Dodds is completely out, they have left a very bitter taste in my mouth about the athletic program as a whole, not just football.

In 2013, a properly run athletic program would not have Brown, Barnes and Guarrido as coaches. Dodds is fine making the $ he is. The whole Department is rotted to the core and all parties(other then women's volleyball) need to go. Especially Dodds, who kept us from the getting with many of the nice people in ACC.

Bottom line is we have been F'ing around past 3 years. And we need a lot of change.

Merging with ACC with some friends (Ou, bu, TT, OKSt) would be a blessing.
