Crazy how Saban happened to sign the extension and we learn Mack is most likely coming back. Coincidence?? To say Hornsports was blowing smoke is BS. I'm a firm believer that had Mack been gone Saban was on board. I think Mack is a great CEO but his days at an elite coach have passed him by. Prove me wrong Mack
I think Mack wants one more year to go out on his terms. I think the reporting was right that Saban was coming provided they could wrap up the deal this week and that Mack would resign on his own terms. Saban did not want to come if he was seen to be forcing Mack out IMO. Saban also did not want this to fester all bowl season. He was either going to make a move this week or never. Ultimately, it took too long to make it happen.
Having Mack around one more year is not that bad. Look at all the options out there that Texas would want. None were realistic at this point.
Harbaugh is not leaving the NFL at this time (not without a Super Bowl ring)
Gus Malhzan will not leave Auburn in the middle of a National Championship run
Jimbo Fisher will not leave FSU either before the Natl Championship.
Urban Meyer is not leaving Ohio State.
Pete Carroll is not leaving the Seahawks.
etc. etc. etc.
No one else really moves the needle for most Texas fans, so if that is the case, why not wait another year for better choices on the market.
Yes, Jimbo Fisher would jump to Texas but to wait until January, 7 would set recruiting back a year with the uncertainty it would create.
Personally, one name I think would be worth considering at this point would be Dabo Swinney. He is an up an coming coach, has great credentials and has really elevated Clemson over the last 4 years. Remember when Mack came from North Carolina? A Swinney may not be a bad addition to Texas
