OK..I admit it, I'm jealous of fans that have a successful teams to be a fan of.
I'm 66, and by my unscientific count I have attended over 200 Longhorn Games, another 100 Cowboys games, a few dozen Dallas Stars games, 150 Dallas Mavericks games, and maybe a 100 Texas Ranger Games. For all my money and time I have witnessed in person, one Championship Game. That was the Super Bowl XXVII.
Throw in another 1000 or so games watched on the idiot tube and by far most of the times I am with these folks.
So by my unofficial count I have either attended in person or watched on television nearly 2000 games by teams I am a fan of. What have I gotten for by time and money?
5 Cowboys Super Bowl Wins
0 World Series by the Rangers
1 Stanley Cup by the Dallas Start
2 National Championships by Texas
1 NBA Championship by the Dallas Mavericks
9 moments of pure elation in over 2000 tries. That is .0045% of the time I get to feel the ultimate. The other 99.9955 of the time I suffer.
Sometimes I am also my worst enemy. I had a free airline ticket, a game ticket to the 2005 National Championship game, and a place to stay in Cali. I passed because I couldn't get off at work. I should have quit the job or killed my boss, instead I missed the single greatest game in the history of great games. I f##king missed this.
Oh and a confession. That Super Bowl game where my Cowboys killed the Bills? I got so wasted on Saturday night I can barely remember the game. I threw up twice in my mouth and once on the guy in front of me. I even bought a program but lost it, along with the game stub. Shit was so expensive during the weekend, I had to max out credit cards and borrow a grand from a pal. All toll, including everything, I spent over $5 grand.
Being a fan sucks balls. Being me is worse.
