Col 1 = Year

Col 2 = The total # of teams who had a defense that gave up less than 300 yards/game

Col 3 = The # of teams in the BCS title game that gave up less than 300 yards/game

Col 4 = BCS Winner and their average yards/game given up on defense

As you can see, only 160 teams in the last 14 years averaged less than 300 yards on defense, but 20 of those 160 teams played for the BCS championship. 11/14 teams won the game. 2 others were very close to 300 yards (Texas 302 & Ohio State 321). The exception is Auburn vs Oregon in 2010 where neither defense fell in the category.

Based on this stat alone, I would say that defense is very important. Is 300 yards/game a magical number? No. But I would think its a pretty good goal if I was a coach. The following is the average yards per game given up by Strong at Florida/Louisville over the last 9 years.
