Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

I served briefly with a Colonel in Vietnam who had been awarded the MOH as a captain in Korea. He led his company on the last bayonet charge in US Army history to take a hill from a Chinese battalion after his company ran out of ammo. In the movie Pork Chop Hill, Gregory Peck played him. His picture ought to be in the dictionary next to the word "manly". Getting to know him made me curious about other MOH winners. Fort Meade, MD has a MOH museum. It is terrific.

Great story.

In the late 70s I served on an aircraft carrier. My CO had spent 5 1/2 years in Hanoi Hilton. I saw his scars. Came back from that and became the captain of a carrier. I always viewed him in awe.

Friends around me did amazing, heroic deeds in Vietnam, especially on March 6, 1968. You can read about the event in the book "No Shining Armor" by Otto J. Lehrack. March ambush of our company starts on page 243.

Great to see a story like this.  A lot of our service men and women do not get the appreciation and respect for the jobs they're doing day-in and day-out to protect our freedoms.  Excellent post Duke.

A story I always like to share is about my grandfather.  He served in the US Army as a Lt. Colonel in WWII and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during Operation Market Garden.  He subsequently had a city park named after him in Beek, Holland for those same actions.

If you're interested, I can post a link.

I was in the 82nd for a while after returning from Vietnam. Truly, a special, very proud bunch of insane SOBs. Their legacy is a match for any division.

Duke,

My uncle was a Captain in the 82nd as well during Vietnam.  Won the Silver Star for 'gallantry in Action' 8/31/70 U.S. IV Corps SE Asia.

Much respect for you guys.

I would like to thank all of you that served our country in the armed forces. Without people like y'all I wouldn't have my freedom. I really appreciate all that you have done. God bless you and God bless America
