I personally believe we could be hiring just about anybody at this point for the OC position:

RB: Porter is staying. No, Applewhite can do it. No, it is Strong's guy from Louisville. The winner: Robinson and that wasn't a name anyone I saw mention.

WR: Wyatt is staying. No, it's Joker. Applewhite can do it. TBD

OL: Everyone and their mother wanted Wickline and you heard his name mentioned. People also said Searles was staying. Perhaps this one shouldn't be used as an example.

DL; Giles is staying. Orgeron is coming, was seen in Austin. Nope, its Rumph. Noone saw it.

LB: BJM was announced early.

DB: Akina. Gray. Bedford. Nope, its Vaughn. Noone saw it.

Does anyone notice a trend here?

We have all seen the Morris, Herman, Frost, Kyle S., Riley candidates thrown around, and it is possible this goes down like the OL position, but let's think of some big names, and it must be big for Watson to be the QB coach (IMO)...

How about?

Mike Sherman -- Ties to Texas

Gary Kubiak -- Ties to Texas

Mike Shanahan -- Strong & Mike were GA's at Florida (not confirmed) and not sure there are any ties to Texas outside of Kyle

Who else fits that description? A home run hire with ties to Texas...

Sherman would be a fantastic addition to the staff but not as OC. OL or some recruiting position

This is obviously going to sound really random, but how about WVU's Shannon Dawson. He had a great year in 2012 with WVU, was amazing at Stephen F. Austin (TX ties), has a system along the lines of what Strong seems to be looking for, and would certainly be in line with the "out of nowhere" pattern.

,,,,, Frost, Herman and Riley are very good hires but not a HR like Morris
So it turns out Riley was Adam James' position coach when all that stuff went down.

At the start of the regular season, James's position coach, Lincoln Riley, called him into his office to inform him that he was being demoted to third string, citing poor effort in practice. James disagreed. So Riley showed him practice film to prove his point. When James left the office that day, he took his anger out on the door.
Another coach confronted him. "Why did you break the door?"

"What the hell do you think?" James said.

Leach thought about kicking him off the team then but didn't. Complicating the relationship between James and the coaching staff was the presence of Adam's father, Craig James. The former NFL player was a college football analyst for ESPN. It wasn't unusual for him to attend Tech practices and cover Tech games. Leach felt he meddled too much. "I heard more from Craig James than I did from the other 120 parents of players combined," Leach said.

Tom Herman has Texas ties

Texas ( GA )

Texas Lutheran ( WR )

Sam Houston St ( WR )

Texas St ( OC )

Rice ( OC )

That's a lot of Texas ties and he's coached and played WR I'm just saying.

Getting excited bring on Tom Herman.

And I forgot all the players Ohio St are recruiting from Texas Herman's name is next to it.

I'm not sure I would call Dawson a home run hire though... Imo, there would be question marks. A home run hire by definition would be someone without question marks...

Morris is a home run hire for sure.

Malzahn would have fit into this category.

How about Mike Bellotti? Though, I'm don't know of any ties to Texas...

its gonna be someone outa left field..charlie has played all of us lol and thats good..we deff wanted change and we are getting it..

While we're throwing names against a wall, how about Mizzou's Josh Henson? Impressive first season as the offensive coordinator at Mizzou, was considered one of the best recruiting coordinators in the country while he was at LSU where I'm sure he also did a great deal of recruiting in TX, and he handles TEs at Mizzou which would theoretically free up a coaching spot if Chambers were to be retained only in an off the field role.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Jake Spavital. Would run a Holgorsen/Sumlin type offense. Knows Texas. QB coach though, so doesn't fit too well with Watson. Think he would have been a great hire if Strong didn't feel obligated to retain Watson.

Here is some bio on Noel Mazzone

Some on BC think his system would mesh well with Wickline's blocking schemes--

OC at UCLA since 2012

OC at at Arizona State 2010-11.

Mazzone's first season on the field with the Bruins turned into a record-setting campaign. Senior running back Johnathan Franklin established new school marks for career rushing yards (4,403 yards), career all-purpose yards (4,925), single-season rushing yards (1,734), single-season 100-yard rushing games(9) and single-season all-purpose yards (2,062). He was selected in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.

Also in 2012, redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley set records for single-season passing yards (3,740), single-season completions (318) and single-season total offense yards (4,095-fifth on the all-time Pac-12 list). In addition, Hundley became the first UCLA quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in three straight games. Team records were also achieved for most yards in a season (6,531), most points scored in a season (482), most passing yards gained in a season (3,860), most first downs in a season (331) and most points scored in a quarter (30).

Running back Cameron Marshall recorded 18 rushing touchdowns and ranked seventh in the Pac-12 with an 80.8 rushing yards per game mark. In 2010, Arizona State was listed No. 15 nationally in passing offense and No. 29 in total offense. In addition, ASU rushed for 19 touchdowns in 2010 after totaling 14 in all of 2009. Marshall had nine TD runs in 2010, the most by an ASU runner since Delvon Flowers had 11 in 2001.

Mazzone came to Arizona State from the NFL after having served as wide receivers coach of the New York Jets from 2006-2008 and working as a personnel consultant for the franchise in 2009. There, he coached wideouts Jericho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles, who set a Jets record for combined yardage and receptions.

Developed this dynamic and creative Spread offense over 3 decades worth of high school, College and NFL coaching

Total heart for high school coaches and programs; looking to pass along a great system with his 30 years of coaching experience

ASU Offense averaged 281 yards passing/game and 142 yards rushing/game

Coached QBs at almost every college coaching stop

Worked with Tim Tebow prior to NFL Combines

Passing Coordinator, New York Jets, NFL, 2009

Wide Receivers Coach, New York Jets, NFL, 2006-2008

Offensive Coordinator/QBs Coach, University of Mississippi, 2005

I represented a party in that lawsuit. the depositions were a hoot.

Haha. I bet.

Apparently Riley wanted James off the team, but Leach would not go that far. Maybe if he had, all the drama might have been avoided? Or the lawsuit at least.

The good news from our perspective is that Riley was not afraid to make the call even when he knew there would be blowback. Maybe a lot of it.

Last one I'll throw out there. Mike Norvell.

Runs a spread offense at ASU that ranked #10 in the nation in PPG and 17th in YPG.

Before ASU, at Tulsa, he was a wide receivers coach before being promoted to also having the duties of passing game coordinator and director of recruiting. While he was there in 2008 the Tulsa offense ranked #1 nationally in YPG, #2 in scoring, and #9 in passing yards. Also, in '07 Tulsa became the first team in NCAA history to have a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and three 1,000-yard receivers in a single season.

He was a four year starter at WR at Central Arkansas, and started his coaching career there working with WRs, RBs, and ST.

Central Arkansas also happens to be Charlie Strong's Alma Mater.

I don't think we will poach Norvell from ASU since we just hired Patterson.

If Lincoln Riley is an option, how about Phillip Montgomery?

Morris is not a HR because he will not stay any length of time to be a HR.

Watch the name of Mike Groh. He will not seem like a HR but to the coaches of sophisticated passing games he is.
