What were the five best Texas teams ever/in your lifetime?

1. 2005
2. 1969
3. 2008
4. 2009
5. 1970
6. 1962
7. 1983
8. 1977
9. 2004
10. 1996
My list consists of teams I can remember. We won two natty's when I was too young to remember.

1. 2005 - Only natty (I can remember) in my lifetime. This team didn't have a weakness and had, perhaps, the best college player I've ever seen.
2. 1983 - Best defense I've ever seen (gave up less than 10 points per game). Undefeated regular season. Lost out on a natty because they lost the Cotton Bowl to a Georgia tham that only crossed the 50 yardline twice. Worst sports-hurt I've ever experienced.
3. 1977 - Earl Campbell.... need I say more? Undefeated regular season -- Earl got hurt in the Cotton Bowl.... I doubt it cost us the game and a natty - but it certainly made a difference.
4. 2008 - Better than the next team that made it to the title game.
5. 2009 - Best team in the country that year, with Colt.

Honorable Mention:

2024 - Another great defense... with a better offense than 1983. Coach K frustrated me at times with the 8 yard cushion on third and 2... but this defense was fantastic! Carried this team.

1990 - Best game I've ever been to in person was beating Cougar High and the run and shoot this year -- after they embarrassed us the previous couple of years. The no show embarrassment in the Cotton Bowl keeps this excellent team out of the top 5.

1995 - First Big 12 Champion, beating a great Nebraska team. Finished 10-2-1. A horrible showing in the Sugar Bowl was a dissapointing way to end this great season. When John Macovich motavated his teams, they could be spectacular.... especially on offense.

Adding:

1961 - #1 Texas lost to TCU 6-0. James Saxton was knocked out of the game with a cheap shot. He was an All-American and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. After the game Darrell Royal said about TCU, "It's not what they eat and tote off, it's what they fall into and mess up that hurts."

1964 team - lost a heartbreaker to Arky. Instead of a sure tie, Texas attempted to go for two. Lost 14-13. The 1965 Orange Bowl Texas beat #1 Alabama and Joe Namath 21 - 17.

Both years Texas was heartbreaking close to winning a national championship.

Great list. The only team I would add was the 1968 team which finished 9-1-1 with a tie and a loss to start the season. Street replaced Bradley at QB during the disastrous loss at Tceh and the offense became the best in the nation. Kicked the asses of the Number 8 fake UT team in the Cotton Bowl.

Adding to your post, Tennessee was a good team. Texas kicked their butts.
