*****GAME THREAD: #11 TEXAS vs. RICE OWLS*****

This was the first move in next weeks chess game. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Hold anybody to less than 200 yards is good in todays football.
I don’t think that you’re saying Ewers was told to throw long balls out of bounds - and for our OL to miss assignments to set up BAMA for a “check-mate”……… are you?

I sometimes try to mentally think we do this on purpose just to make myself feel better about our deep ball prospects for a week lol

Why not? Texas will be better next week.

I'm confident the team will be much more focused for 'Bama. It's human nature to give less than 100% against a less skilled team, especially with a big game in a week. We'll find out what they're really made of next week.

I do find it funny that if I didn't watch the game, I would swear we lost based on the negative posts on all sites (me included in that).
A win is a win, style points do not count.   And one could have viewed the game and come to a conclusion that preseason hype painted a picture of a Texas team vastly superior to the one that played.

I believe both sentences can coexist without contradiction.

I cannot believe how weak some of our fans are. Admittedly during the years 2000-2010 when we won 10 games or better every year I remember thinking the same thing!

What I can't understand is the talk of replacing Ewers after going 19-30, 260, 3tds, 1 rsh TD and 0 TOs.  Sure he missed a couple of downfield throws, but he was efficient.  From 2010-2021 we would've killed for those numbers every game.

I haven’t seen too many folks saying to replace him.   What I feel most people expected is for him to take another step and we wanted to see it Day 1.  We saw it from Colt, Sam and VY and were hoping Ewers would.  Yes it’s game 1 only but the same glaring mistakes he made last year with the deep ball and footwork are still there.   They don’t even looked improved at all.   I believe he was better in his progressions, his passion and his agility though only slightly.

Lots of games left.

The light didn’t turn on for VY until halfway through his second session as starter. A lot of calls for Chance Mock to start during this time because Vince was too raw.

I don’t know what it will take for Ewers to turn the corner, but he doesn’t have to be perfect every throw. When Worthy has three steps there’s no need to paint the sideline…just lay it out there and let him go get it.

Feels like he needs to loosen up a bit and still in his head from the deep ball problems last season. Plus we have long developing pass plays and not picking up all the rushers isn’t helping either.

In Colt’s second year as a starter he threw for 22 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Completed a bit over 65% of his passes.  He turned the corner in year three.

There’s a bit more expected from a 5 star perfectly rated recruit.  I think many (including myself) expected a major jump in year 2.   There’s time since the season just stated but game 1 didn’t indicate a major jump just the same issues as last year with a bit of improvement in a few areas.   Whether it’s fair to put that pressure on Ewers or not is each fan’s decision.

Colt was a 3-star that far exceeded anyone’s expectations in his career.

I would say once they are on campus high school rankings no longer matter, don’t forget Ewers may not be as far along as he might be if he had played his HS senior year.

Speaking strictly from a statistical standpoint.

Colt's first year was his second best.

His second year was his worst.

His third year was his best.

His fourth year was his second worst.

What’s your point?  Season 2 is one game old. QE may have made a jump we don’t know. And I expect a lot out of any starting QB. I don’t care what their stars were. The QB that won last years national championship was a walk-on.  VY only beat Rice 35-13 in his second season as a starter. And that wasn’t a good Rice team.  We almost lost to a bad Kansas team that year as well. We had a miracle to get out of that game with a win. Sam was a very good QB and a great leader. But he had bad games every season.  And the blame in some of them didn’t fall far from him.

Has the number of snaps been released? Just curious who all played and how many snaps.

We are reacting to the first game and the first game showed marginal improvement from QE3.  His biggest issues on footwork and the deep ball don’t appear to be improved from the prior season.  More is expected out of our starter and “QB-whisperer” coach.

That’s the point.

let’s go beat Bama!
