2022 Texas Portal News

Landing Ewers from the portal has different dynamics than most. It's difficult for most people to publicly admit a mistake, especially young men. Part of what's going on in his mind must be insecurity about coming back to a place that basically turned on him when he decommitted. Of course we'd root for him now, but can an 18 year old forget about all of that? He's not looking at it from the same lens we are.

I'm also not one to think program success rides on the decision of one 18 year old. He could be great, or he could be a product of a great system that can't read a defense worth squat. I can think of at least two 5 star QB recruits who came to Texas to "save the program" and ended up being mediocre or simply above average.

This season showed how much we need several options at QB. Now more than ever it's easier to rebuild with so much movement in the portal than hoping a transfer will fall in our lap. Sark has not had the chance yet to identify and bring in his own QBs. He's getting that opportunity now to find guys who will work well in his system. Maybe Ewers can be that guy, and of course I'd love to see it. If not there are a lot of good options out there who can run a well coached offense.

Well said and thanks for the thoughts.

I can agree with your sentiments and actually would like to see a run at Slovis from SC if he jumps into the portal which would not surprise me.

So Ewers to Tech and Brennan to Texas? No source on it other than a friend (LSU fan) who follows recruiting closer than I do.

Here's a response to the Ewers/Texas/Tech thing that I thought was worth sharing. Its from a poster named DCL24

"This is exactly what I’m talking about though. The entirety of longhorn fandom is circulating this rumor that a lot of this hinges on some combination of hiring dodge, harrell, and Emmett Jones. 247 literally has one report on thing today from roach who said he can’t find any validity to the dodge rumors and the name he keeps hearing is kitley from wku. Strike 1 on false rumors. Secondly, he says he’s hearing confidence from tech sources. The very next paragraph he says he’s also hearing confidence from Texas sources and goes further by saying he heard something last night that confidence that this could wrap up early in the week if it’s in Texas favor. Not a sure thing, but hardly a good note for tech. All that to say, that’s pretty much what roach said last night. Strike 2 on false rumors. Lastly, nahlin basically came in after an entire day of a completely unraveling thread to throw shade at the posters by saying he had nothing new to report obvious by his lack of updates and then reiterated his post from yesterday the tech has a lot of NIL resolve but that Texas is being “aggressive.” That’s strike 3 on false rumors. These are the three sites I subscribe to so I can’t speak to anything going on on OB or rivals, but I can say there is zero validity to this idea that tech is running away with this thing that is being attributed at least partially to the very sites that I’m a subscriber to. Again, he could very well pick tech, but it’s not at all been reported that they’re leading"

This Quinn Ewers saga has people freaking out way too much. Is tech an legit option. Yes. Could he be going to tech. Yes. Put people have taken message board posts and made them gospel. A weed dealer knows someone who knows it’s gonna be tech. The brother-in-law of a person is on the staff at Southlake and he says it’s gonna be tech. That’s all hearsay. I think tech will work a lot talk about the NIL he could make there but this guy will make NIL money anywhere. I’m still on the side of he will pick Texas. It just makes the most sense. Start with the timing. The top players thinking of transferring don't just put there name out there and go from there. Usually there has been some talks with staffs through go between. With that, everyone thought he could be entering the portal but the logic was he would wait until after Spring practices to see if he could win the back up QB role at OSU. If tech was the landing place, he could wait until after spring and then go there if he didn’t win the back spot. Next the talk is Ewers wants to bring talent with him to where he goes. If you look at the top players in the state. Which ones are uncommitted who would want to go to tech? Which commits could they flip? I don’t see many. So the talk of bring talent doesn’t line up with him going to tech. Sure he could sign and get 2023 guys to look tech's way but even when they were winning with the pirate, they didn’t really kill it in recruiting so hard to see that being the case with UT going to join aggy in the SEC and the raiding of players from other programs outside the state. Not to mention tech lost to a pretty bad Texas team this year. Can’t sell him on their position in a new Big 12 when they lost to us this season. Also with Baylor looking good, Ok State being good, Iowa St still having Campbell. TCU will be better than them. Cincy will be better than them. And maybe UCF will be better than them. That means he would be going to a 6th best team in a down conference. Not really a good fit for the best recruit in the nation. On the other hand. He likes Sarks offense. He just saw what it could do with players he likely thinks he’s better than. He likes Texas. He was committed there already. He sees he has a Heisman candidate in the backfield and an All-American at WR already. He gets to live in Austin vs Lubbock. He will be the starting QB at The University of Texas. He will get NIL deals. Bijan is said to have made a million dollars last season. He will not hurt for deals. Especially when we are in the SEC. So yeah. Could he choose tech. Of course. They would build a statue for him right now to get him there. But the most logical spot for him is Texas.

Exactly. Captain Hook'em is someone I know personally. His takes are sometimes the best you read in a day. Very insightful and balanced. Glad he's here.
Exactly what?  The gif was because it got quiet for a couple hours.  I checked in and nothing to read.

Are there cliff notes for this or can we at least get some paragraphs in there ?

I want Ewers obviously but more importantly we need to fix the line.  We already have the best RB in college and he was neutralized the entire second half of the season.  Any chance with Banks at all?  Whats the word on Campbell?

So you're saying I need to get a hobby other than reading the recruiting forum on the internet? Guess I can take up dominoes.?

I wouldve been playing golf these last 2 days, but the damn covid booster did me in.  All i can do is watch TV and read the boards.

Yes I agree.  Casey and Hudson are both really good QBs.  Behind better offensive line play I think either are plenty good enough.  I’m hopeful because I think Flood is a top OL coach we just have to get some guys for him.  I like the two commits we already have on the OL.  I’d like a couple more commits and a couple of portal guys to bridge the gap.  I’m hopeful ??

Regarding Ewers, we get him or we don't. I'm not going to lose sleep a decision made by a 18/19 yr old kid.

Besides, I believe a healthy Thompson behind a good o-line will be just fine. Kid has moxie and natural leadership abilities, I like that about him.

We are in a place where reality is perception.  In reality we suck and so the perception is we suck.

No one has been able to dissect and solve the Texas riddle.  Seems we have thrown stuff against the wall and put the best face on the mess it has created and still no one takes responsibility for the failures.  You know those people that get paid millions of dollars to hire the most qualified candidate that can be bought.  The last iteration of the AD has yet to see if his project will paid dividends.

I think we are all waiting to see which way this thing goes.  IMO, losing a talent like Ewers to a Texas Tech if that does in fact happen will be the most damming evidence to date that we are doomed to repeat the same 3 and out coaching pattern that has been plaguing us since Charlie Strong and it will further solidify our reality and perception, we suck.

Texas Tech's Rivals site is reporting QB Quinn Ewers is in Lubbock today.
IT followed up this report saying they expect Texas to match whatever it is that Tech is doing to get Ewers, but obviously him being in Lubbock this weekend is far from ideal.

Or he doesn’t like competition…

I just cant see it.  Ewers went to OSU for the cash and one of the best team in FBS.  He leaves that for Lubbock with a new coach?  They dont even have an OC, do they?  Its utterly laughable.

I feel like this is agent games for money.   Ewers was a longhorn fan growing up.  I cant blame him about the money but it clouds my perception of him.
