Will Class 5A Be Split into Two?
A decision on whether 5A will split into Division I and Division II before the season could come by the beginning of next year.
On Sunday, the UIL policy committee ordered a referendum ballot on a split 5A. The proposal passed unchanged through the general legislative council on Monday. Superintendents will now vote on whether to split the classification before the season, like the UIL does for Class 4A and below.
UIL deputy director Jamey Harrison said a survey of 5A schools found 47 percent were in favor of a split, but the raw survey of school district superintendents had 60 percent support.
A UIL spokesperson said the vote could be completed as early as next year. If the proposal passes it will go into effect during the 2018 realignment. If it fails, it can't be revisited for three years, unless the UIL's legislative committee determines it an emergency.
"I would be in favor of it," Chris Gilbert, coach of 5A Lancaster, said this week. "More kids matters. If you've got a higher enrollment, you've usually got more big kids."
Lancaster, with 1901.5 students at last year's realignment, is the fourth-smallest high school in its district. It is likely headed to the Division II playoffs this season. In a split 5A, they'd be probably be in Division I.
If 5A was split exactly in half at this realignment, the Division I cutoff would be 1,741 students.
A CONTRAST TO TODAY'S FOOTBALL LANDSCAPE
Remember when teams would grind it out with the running game? Three yards and a cloud of dust? We don’t see that much anymore in today’s football landscape.
Garland Naaman Forest and Frisco High are two such teams still in existence. Naaman Forest averages about eight passes per game and are 4-3 on the season. Frisco averages only five passes per game and they are 5-2 so far.
Rockwall Heath has only attempted 12 passes all season. Thats two attempts per game.
Reminds of the ’96 Lewisville Farmers, who rode the Wishbone T to a state championship victory over Converse Judson. The Farmers scored 45 points per game and knocked off Judson 58-34. In the win over Judson, Lewisville did not attempt a single pass.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of that state championship season.
CLASS 6A COULD EXPAND
ROUND ROCK -- The UIL's legislative council gave the UIL some more leeway during realignment, increasing the maximum number of schools in 6A from 245 to 250.
That could send a few area teams from being one of the biggest 5A schools to being one of the smallest 6A schools.
Mansfield Summit, Mansfield Lake Ridge, and Highland Park were three of the five biggest 5A schools at the most recent realignment. (Amarillo and Laredo Nixon were the other two).
UIL deputy director Jamey Harrison said during the change doesn't necessarily mean the UIL will use all 250 slots, but it has maxed out the number of 6A schools in recent realignments. (courtesy DMN)
