Chris Nelson spoke with the media after Tuesday's practice
On what he liked and disliked of Buechele's game: Just liked the fact that he executed and did a lot of the things well that we asked him to do. But just like I said, anytime, especially when you're young, you got a lot of room for growth and a lot of room for improvement so you know that's our goal right now at every position with every kid. It's lets get better. Be focused on us and continue to drive yourself and motivate yourself to be better.
On the thought process of how to rotate Swoopes and Buechele: Whatever it's going to take to win. Just situation of the game, whatever was going on. At the end of the day our mindset was whatever was going to help us win at that moment and put ourselves in a situation to be successful is the reason we did what we did.
On Tyrone Swoopes: Well the things that we like and love about Tyrone, there's nothing kind of about it, and I spoke about it last week, he's a big strong, great athlete, he's highly, highly competitive, he's a great person. And we knew, had a really good feeling about the things we wanted to do with him. And those are just things we've carried in our offense. And it's about being creative, and being able to set up and put guys in a situation to be successful.
On John Burt calling him a "bro" and his relationship with his players: It's funny you ask, because I asked him the same question. What do you mean? And it funny his answer was "Coach it's how you interact with us." So I took that as a positive and I probably reached back to being a high school football coach and how we are with our kids. Everything is based on relationships and being able to relate to kids. And especially young kids and that's our job. So if that's the interaction and that's the phrase he wanted to tag me with than I guess that's what I got to live with. But again it goes back to being relatable to kids and having great relationships with kids.
On the message to the players after Texas being ranked No. 11: Our focus is solely on The University of Texas and us. That's us-The University of Texas. Our focus is on us and getting us better. We're going to take it one week at a time. Our opponent this week is UTEP. But our extreme focus is on us and us improving and getting better fundamentally, technique wise and everything we want to execute and get accomplished. But we got a good opponent obviously in UTEP coming into town and that's our sole focus right now. But we're working on us and improving us.
On what they need to improve on: Just eliminating, not only lessen, but trying to eliminate penalties. Just being able to execute and being able to make sure that we execute the things that we practice everyday- fundamental wise, technique wise, scheme wise. There were times that we were a little inconsistent with that. So just trying to be more consistent with what and how we do things.
On how being a QB has helped Jerrod Heard's transition: I think that it was very advantageous for him. When you start there, you know from a scheme standpoint, you really get everything. In that aspect you just go back to when he was in that room, he pretty much had everything. He had to know everything and what was going on so he moved into the receiver room, which is still not an easy transition, and that guy is really athletic and he's really honed in, he's really focused, motivated, and determined about being a really good receiver. So he's jumped in wholeheartedly with that and what he wanted to do and what we've asked him to do. Because he started there I think it gave him an advantage.
On what Shane Buechele needs to improve on: Just continue to know exactly what we're doing schematically. Being able to know fast and just continue to be better in every phase as a quarterback.
Punter Michael Dickson
On the impact of being able to practice for a full year: It made a massive difference. Last year I'd only really been punting for about six months probably before I came to play. But this year, having the whole offseason and just building that connection with your teammates…I wanted it last year, but this year it means so much more for me to play well. I'd go out there in the offseason and try to punt when my legs were sore. The offseason made a big, big difference.
On how he trained this past summer: I just worked by myself. I was really disappointed with my season last year and I just really wanted to compete against myself. I could punt like this last year. I just didn't do it in the game. So I was just really focused on just kicking it and getting the muscle memory in so you don't have to think about it.
On what was different last year: I was thinking too much about technique last year and trying to think about what I meant to do. I'm just really focusing on getting the muscle memory in and letting my body do what it has to do.
On moving forward after last year's mishandled snap in the loss to Oklahoma State: I try not to think about it, but I don't forget about it. I don't want to forget about it. I get reminded every now and again. It's disappointing that that happened, but I feel like it's going to help me in the long run. It makes me not take anything for granted.
On rooming with kicker Trent Domingue on the road: He's a really good dude. He's really chill, relaxed, very confident in what he does. I learned some stuff from him. If he misses a kick in practice, he forgets about it and makes the next one. He's that type of guy.
Defensive Tackle Chris Nelson
On winning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week: It sounds great man, but I give all the credit to my team. We prepare hard for it.
On what it took to win the award: It was all pretty much in preparation. We had enough time to prepare for Notre Dame, and we just locked in. We took the focus in and worked on the keys and went out to the game and did a great job.
On the atmosphere on Sunday night: The atmosphere was great, but Coach Strong always says, 'Big-time players step up in big games.' All the fans, you just have to tune them out and just focus in on the game.
On the key to getting playing time after being lower on the depth chart: Focusing. I had a lot of players ahead of me, so I had to take the back road a couple of times and just key in on things to better myself for the game.
