Anyone know why Banks didn't see any action vs Canada?
He is a very young player with regards to how long he has been playing basketball. He is considered a project with limited basketball skills compared to other players his age, yet he is supposedly a phenomenal athletic specimen.
He was a football player until he decided to try basketball his freshman year. That year, he could barely dribble and effectively was the ball boy because he could not even make a lay up. He was brought up to the varsity during the playoffs his freshman year because ... well ... he was tall. During his team's last playoff game - I believe it was the state finals game - after sitting on the bench the whole time, he apparently had an epiphany and decided he wanted to play basketball.
As coach Shaka put it in a recent interview, Banks is extremely raw as a basketball player - he lacks several thousand hours of practice and playing time compared to his contemporaries, but he is like unmolded clay. He apparently has the ability to become something special if he is willing to put in the work. He was chosen for the U18 USA team based on his raw potential rather than his current level of basketball skill. From what I have read, he is going to play for Texas immediately, a lot - more for the teams' need rather than because of his refined basketball skill set.
To answer your question more directly, Banks was not considered one of the top options at the four or five for the USA team. The game against Canada was closer that the previous games, so there was more time for him in games where the result was not so much in doubt. I think that he might become something very special in three or four years. He should be a lot of fun to watch as he grows up as a Longhorn.
I have my season tickets in the first row upstairs where we have been for decades, and I am ready for the season to begin.
