ANYTHING SPRING FOOTBALL!!

Just read the roster. Wow, Warren at 255#!!! Hope he hasn't sacrificed any quickness. Wouldn't want to tackle him, especially with Foreman pounding them first!
Pretty impressive having two running backs at 255 pound and 238 pound.

The RBs look the part

Junior D'Onta Foreman carries 238 pounds on his 6'0 frame, according to the school. Sophomore Chris Warren goes 6'2, 255. It's hard not to notice:

The good news, according to head coach Charlie Strong, is that Warren isn't carrying any bad weight after gaining more than 20 pounds since Texas released the fall roster.

"You look at him and he's just so big and wide," Strong said. "It's no fat there, he can carry it, but we're going to see now. And with what we're doing, he may shed a pound or two, but he's just gotten so much stronger. And you're talking about someone who's never lifted weights before, and this is probably the first offseason he's been through."

Warren says that his clothes no longer fit him and Strong isn't surprised, but he does want to see Warren and Foreman run hard to ensure that the physical advantage they possess over opposing defensive backs -- and a lot of linebackers -- won't go to waste. Based on how both ran last season, that shouldn't be a huge concern

Observations from first day of spring practice at Texas

-As expected, quarterback Tyrone Swoopes got reps with the first-team offense followed by Jerrod Heard (second) and Shane Buechele (third). Redshirt freshmen Kai Locksley and Matthew Merrick did not get snaps during team drills. Hard to take away much from a practice in shorts, but Swoopes looked to have had the best day throwing. Heard made a bad decision throwing late into coverage and was nearly picked off in the flat by Cameron Townsend.

-Sterlin Gilbert’s uptempo offense is just that — uptempo. After every snap, the ball is advanced five yards and within a couple of seconds it’s snapped again. Very high paced. Players definitely took advantage of their water breaks.

-The play of the day belonged to Dylan Haines, who jumped up and came down with a one-handed interception. Absolutely splendid. Haines has had his share of gimme interceptions the past two seasons, but he had to really work for this one.

-True freshman Collin Johnson might be the best receiver on the roster. The early-enrollee from San Jose is well put together at 6-6, 212 pounds and the rotator cuff he tore in his senior season of high school did not prevent him from showing up to Texas with bulging biceps. In team drills, Johnson beat Holton Hill deep (incomplete) and Davante Davis on a slant (complete). Later, he shrugged Hill to the ground and made a wonderful one-handed catch out of bounds on a deep ball. After one practice, Johnson looks like a star.

-Observations on physiques: Shane Buechele is short and thin. P.J. Locke’s chest has gotten big, as have Jerrod Heard’s arms. DeAndre McNeal looks to have slimmed down, but he struggled with drops. Chris Warren, at 255 pounds, is huge.

-Early-enrollee Zach Shackelford worked with the first-team at center, as did Terrell Cuney at left guard.

-Visitors included Mike and Melinda Perrin, Quandre Diggs and 2016 cornerback signee Eric Cuffee.

Per Taylor Gaspar:

"I was sold on Collin Johnson's skills the first time I watched his film. Some people questioned if the skills he showed would translate to college because he attended a small, private high school in California.

I am even more sold on Johnson after seeing him Monday evening.

CJ is a man in every sense of the word. The wide receiver is a legitimate 6-6 and has skills similar his football role model, Calvin Johnson.

It's impossible to miss him on the field, not only because of his towering height, but also because the kid can ball. I don't recall seeing him walk at any moment during Monday's practice. Johnson is going to fight for playing time and I expect he will perform very well once his time has come. And I think the time will come very, very soon.

My early prediction is as long as he stays healthy, Collin Johnson will start against Notre Dame."

CHRIS WARREN

Many people were shocked at the weight listed next to RB Chris Warren on the official spring football roster. Warren has gained more than 20 pounds since the 2015 season and is currently listed as 255 pounds.

Strong discussed Warren's weight gain at his Monday press conference, labeling him as a guy who has "no fat."

I didn't know what to expect ...

I'm starting to believe the "no fat" comment is in fact true. The 6-2, now 255-pound back is a clydesdale of a man. If Warren can continue to run as hard as he did during his freshman season with the added 20 pounds of muscle, opposing defenses will shutter at the sound of his name.

I like the look of this new offense, we should be able to shock some people this year. I think our starting QB against Notre Dame will be Shane, he's a baller.

I'll be surprised if the starting QB isn't Swoopes.

Gilbert's offense is all about making quick pre snap reads and making quick decisions.

255 pounds ALL MUSCLE???? Sweet Jesus ummm good luck trying to tackle his ass

What is nuts is going all goo goo eyed over a wet behind the ears high school kid and saying he will start game one against Notre Dame when you have two experienced QBs on the roster.

Per Chip:

* Well, Charlie Strong was true to his word to new OC Sterlin Gilbert as the new offense got more than 200 reps in Practice No. 1 of spring ball on Monday.

* The tempo was so torrid (trying to get plays snapped 12 seconds after the ball is set) the defense often times wasn't aligned when the offense snapped the ball.

At one point, senior CB Sheroid Evans walked up to the special assistant signaling the plays in to the offense and said, "This sh*t ain't realistic."

harles Omenihu, who looks great at 262 pounds, and Bryce Cottrell were in the backfield the most among the DEs.

* Malik Jefferson ran first-team middle linebacker with Ed Freeman at OLB - almost all in nickel defense. Breckyn Hager was the second-team MLB with Anthony Wheeler at OLB.

Hager and Wheeler appear to have good communication and chemistry on the field. Something to watch.

* Holton Hill and DaVante Davis were their usual nightmare selves at CB - making it difficult for anyone to throw deep.

* Ryan Newsome got first crack at fielding punts, then Jacorey Warrick, Dorian Leonard and Holton Hill.

* All-in-all, I thought it was a good day for the offense to be able to set the tone of just how fast practices are going to go for this offense to be successful - even though Sheroid Evans said, "This sh*t ain't realistic!"
