National Signing Day 2016 Thread

shotime,

In case you are curious, the drivation for that term ios from the Howlin' Wolf song "Goin" Down Slow". Here are the lyrics.

Man

You know I done enjoyed things that kings and queens will never have

In fact, kings and queens can never get

And they don't even know about

And good times, mmm-mmm

I have had my fun

If I never get well no more

I have had my fun

If I never get well no more

Oh, my health is fading, oh

Oh, yes I'm going down slow

Now lookit here

I did not say I was a millionaire

But I said I have spent more money than a millionaire

'Cause if I had kept all the money then I had already spent

I would've been a millionaire a long time ago

And women, great googly-moogly!

Please write my mama

Tell her the shape I'm in

Please write my ol' mother

Tell her the shape I'm in

Tell her to pray for, oh

Forgive me for my sins

Oh wow I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up there Buddy :)

During the Presser, Coach Strong complimented Norvell on his recruiting efforts.

2 question for anybody that wants to chime in....

Does Norvell stay on the staff for next year?

Does coach allow Brandon Jones to wear a visor next year?

I'm not sure Norvell stays. I gotta feeling Gilbert will get one of his guys in there.

Biggest shoes to fill: Texas Longhorns

These last two weeks, we've been looking at the biggest shoes that need to be filled on every team in the Big 12.

We continue the series with the Texas Longhorns.

Texas defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway

For the past month and especially on National Signing Day, Hassan Ridgeway was essentially the elephant that wasn’t in the room. The monster defensive tackle’s decision to skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft was a serious blow – and, to some, a surprising one – that prompted Texas coaches to invest a lot of time and effort into signing a big class of defensive tackles Wednesday.
Chris Daniels, one of the top 15 DTs in the 2016 class, flipped late to the Longhorns and fills a major position of need. Tom Hauck for Student Sports

They certainly achieved that feat. Texas flipped ESPN 300 DT Chris Daniels from Oklahoma, beat the Sooners for ESPN 300 talent Marcel Southall, convinced another ESPN 300 star (Jordan Elliott) to flip from Michigan and beat TCU, LSU and Texas A&M for rising four-star D'Andre Christmas-Giles. That, plus longtime commit Gerald Wilbon, is a heck of a haul.

And it was truly necessary, because Ridgeway’s departure made defensive tackle depth a serious question mark heading into 2016. Texas does return Poona Ford, who had some great moments in 2015 as a true sophomore, and Paul Boyette Jr. has emerged as a reliable cog and a guy players respect.

But beyond Ford and Boyette, there are some real unknowns. Chris Nelson and Jake McMillon are still young and haven’t had an opportunity to make an impact yet. Hence all those fresh faces who signed this week.

Daniels is listed at 6-foot-4 and 328 pounds by UT. Elliott is 6-3 and 322. This group of DTs checks in at, on average, 6-2 and 310 pounds. They’re not little kids. The question, of course, is how Texas puts them to use.

Depending on what kind of shape these rookies are in when they arrive on campus, it’s safe to say the Longhorns are going to rely upon a rotation of players in the middle. Brick Haley can try a bunch of different pairings until he finds what he seeks.

No one guy will be able to replace Ridgeway, whose best football is still ahead of him. But maybe five or six guys can.

Quite a difference between 247Sports and Scout.com in the class rankings.

247Sports

Scout.com

Unless I have copied incorrectly.... excuse the format if it is confusing. (Houston will appear to show some recruits less than 3-stars).

Scout.com

Texas: .......#8 -- 24 recruits -- 1 5-Star, 15 4-Star,  8 3-Star  -- 12 defense, 12 offense, all high school

Houston: #51 -- 20 recruits -- 1 5-Star,   2 4-Star, 10 3-Star  -- 10 D and 10 O, 17 high school, 3 JC transfers

247Sports

Texas: ..... #13 --  0 5-Star, 10 4-Star,  14 3-Star

Houston...#44 --  1 5-Star,    0 4-Star,  17 3-Star

I do not know the total personnel aspects of Houston's class, but Texas seems to have a very good class, position-by-position. The more I gleaned about them over NSD, the more I was able to appreciate the players, each and every one of them. Not sure why UH's class is getting the raves. That linked report does say they got 7 out of 8 that were being sought after in the SEC. Beyond that part of it, and the one stellar Offensive Lineman, I'll have to learn more.

Also, as to the jump start season.... I looked up UH under Sumlin... had a ranked team all 3 seasons, and in 2011 went to 12-0 with a #6 BCS ranking before losing to So. Miss (if I have that right) in the C-USA title game. Then promptly left for A&M on Dec. 10th as the season ended.

In the first season at aggyland, lost 2 conf games by total of 8 points (I think 3 to FL and 5 to LSU?), and beat Alabama on the road, jumping out to a 20-0 lead after 1 qtr. Then what? Hung on the second season, then two average seasons, I don't think higher than 4th in the west, and lost a 4-star and two 5-star QBs and just got out-recruited by Texas hugely.

Also, Briles took more than two seasons to get his new act together at Baylor after leaving UH some years back. I want to see more seasons shake out all these promising coaches coming out such conferences. The best run so far in meeting 'new coach' expectations has been Urban Meyer going from Utah to Florida to Ohio State. Barely missed a beat along the way. Interesting that Herman coached recently with Meyer, and Charlie coached with him further back.

Art Briles is a snake in the grass
Stephenville was the hometown. I can understand why you'd have ill feelings for them.

Stephvenville seems to have always fielded a good team, i just couldnt stand Briles. He came off as a dirt bag back then. Blake would you have any idea how Stephenville has done the last 5 years? Quite curious.
I don't know about Briles' tenure at UH, but I do know he was loved in Stephenville and is loved at BU. My stepsons are from Stephenville, but did not play football because they had other interests. Yes, they were asked to play because they were good sized young men. The Stephenville coaches wanted them all in for football and nothing else. Maybe Briles' competitive nature comes off as a bit brash, I don't know. Or maybe he is disliked because he's hard to beat? After Briles left  S'ville, they still made modest runs in the playoffs regularly. Since the boys have graduated, I've not kept up as closely.

Until I hear something from the Hudson's, I'm taking this story with a grain of salt.
Not me I take this story fully salted. In fact I may have to go to my doctor to check for hypertension from this story. I'm not going to give the benefit of the doubt to a coach that didn't investigate or didn't care about accepting Sam the rapist Ukwuachu.

I was surprised on NSD when I saw the tweet that Hudson committed to Baylor. I wasn't surprised that he picked Baylor, but the schedule showed that he was supposed to announce in 2 or 3 hours. As far as I'm concerned the story makes sense.

Hudson would be foolish to say anything publicly if true since he's Baylor's property unless he wants to transfer and sit out the season like Cecil Cherry last year. Also speaking out would not help his sister and her track scholarship.

Strong can flat out sell the parents on his program. Can anyone tell me if we have had an academic casualty in the last 2 years? I know Strong is serious about them going to class....does this translate to them all remaining eligible?

We had Devo,Gilbert Johnson, and Cecil Cherry which I believe he transferred (for the life of me I don't know what went down with that one) and Lampkin

Sho....that isnt what I meant. I mean about guys already enrolled. Sometimes guys become academically ineligible, but I havnt heard of one in a while. I just asked because we did not have a good graduation rate with Mack. We might have even gone to a Bowl this past year even with a losing record, but some academic score had us too low on the totem pole.....Nebraska went instead of us, and if anything stinks it is being academically inferior to NU.

Ohh ok well I haven't heard of any yet but the reason why I mentioned these guys whether enrolled or not is because I had read somewhere they were trying to get enrolled due to some circumstances dealing with some of grades, credits and whatnot. It was nuts

I read somewhere that last years team GPA was the highest it's been in a long time. Don't remember if it was an all time high or not.

Glad this program recruited for defense and is working toward that style of play.

Cam was 18 of 41 for 265 yards.

The last couple of minutes, this stat...

.... 20 Incompletions, 10 Quarterback hits. 1 interception, 2 fumbles lost, one for a touchdown.

That was with 3:17 left in the game, still 10-16 before Broncs then scored their last TD and 2 extra points.

He was swarmed, edge-rushed, cover sacked, contained for the most part.

No reason this program can't do the same to the competition. On tv is hard to see the field to see how the safeties and corners are locking things dow in this game, but I'm glad we are continuing to get that kind of defensive talent. Now with the strength and talent in the trenches ... hope to give future QBs the same havoc Cam faced all afternoon and evening.

Announcers (on one of the networks) later commented that the rush in your face causes you to throw off your back foot and sail the ball. Cam as MVP was made to look average much of the game.
