Who are you, why are you here, tell us something interesting about yourself

My name is Bill Kugle III. There is nothing interesting about me, really I just wanted to take this opportunity to pay homage

to my dad, Bill Kugle, Jr. He fought in WW2 as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne.  People who study WW2 history mostly

think of the 82nd Airborne paratroopers in the European theater, against the Germans. My dad participated in the Pacific

theater against the Japanese...the 11th jumped into and liberated the Phillipines. There is a WW2 history episode entitled

"Raid on Los Banos" where paratroopers of the 11th participated in taking a Japanese prisoner camp. The war had turned

in favor of America and there was concern the guards at Los Banos would execute the prisoners.  My dad participated

in re-taking the prison before that happened. Anyway, after the war my dad attended UT on the GI Bill, got his undergrad

degree and went on to graduate from UT Law School. Years later, when it came my time to attend college, my dad said

"If I'm paying your way through college, you'll go to UT or you won't go". Well...I attended UT!  Of course, I'm damn glad

I did, but I owe it to my dad. Never a man more orange-blooded than he...he DID love all things Longhorn!

I got a degree and am currently a petroleum landman working in East Texas.  Never served my country like my dad,

though. He got wounded 3 times serving in the Pacific Theater in WW2, fighting for our country. This post is about him,

not me. He did interesting things in his life, me, not so much.

My name is Randy Mann. I was born 04/23/1952 in The Black-eyed Pea Capitol of the World (Athens, TX). My first UT hero was James Saxton. While I was in 7th grade, my dad and I went through three tornadoes one night in a 20 foot travel trailer in Junction City, Kansas. I went to high school at Moody HS in Corpus Christi. That summer, I had the worst job I've ever had. I worked for the Kellogg company in Taft, TX helping to salvage grain in a grain elevator left roofless by Hurricane Celia. My job entailed sitting underground on a stool watching grain on a conveyor belt and to remove any debris (wood, corrugated tin, rats, etc.)  I wore a face mask, but every time I came outside for a break, I had a mouthful of mud, and being a naturally sweaty guy, the dust stuck to every inch of exposed skin, which attracted every fly in the county. They would land on me, but couldn't get off of me since I was so sticky. Three weeks of that landed me in Spohn Hospital.

As soon as I got out, I joined the Army, where I was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Ft. Devens, MA, Vietnam, Ft. Bragg, NC, Ft. Mead, MD and Ft. Hood, TX.  I was in Vietnam during Nixon's withdrawal program, so in my year there, I was at Nha Trang, Cam Rahn Bay, Artillery Hill, which was just outside Pleiku, Da Nang AFB and Phu Bai. In my three years at Ft. Mead, I was privileged to work at the National Security Operations Center at NSA. When I got out of the Army, I drove down I-35 to go to school at UT in the Spring of 1977. That first year, I went to just about every sporting event UT had. I was there at Disch-Falk for every game when UT started the baseball season with a 37-0 record, as well as the 15 inning game where Rice broke the streak. I was at A&M when Earl clinched his Heisman. I became friends with quite a few UT athletes, a few of whom I still talk to every once in a while.

Since January 1987, I have worked for the IRS, the last 13 years in Appeals. I am 54 days away from retiring. My retirement lunch will be at Threadgill's on Riverside on December 3rd, if anyone wants to come by and say hey. PM me for the time.

a warm, wonderful, and romantic accounting of your road in life dukec#11.

although, it saddens men to reference the harsh accounting at the kellog company.. the situation has obviously built a strong character in you.

congratulations upon your forthcoming retirement!
