*****RED RIVER RIVALRY GAME THREAD - No.3 Texas Longhorns vs. No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners*****

I don't think you can discount the intangible of the ou players and coaches hearing 49-0 from their fans for the past year. They came out with their hair on fire and caused the early turnovers. Texas may have come in a bit overconfident and it showed at times in the trenches.

Ford tied for second with 8 tackles and a TFL. Not surprisingly, Barron led with 11 tackles. Mistake-wise Thompson dropped a pick and was apparently responsible for the busted coverage on the winning ou TD. From my observation, the Watt backups seem to have held their own which was good to see.
DBs held up and safeties did ok but Thompson had his errors.

Ford got 8 tackles but only 3 solo. He was burned left and right by Gabriel on the second level. Missed tackles, bad angles, no hustle. His presence wasn’t not felt at all. Hill way outplayed him.

I have calmed down enough to post again. lol

We should not have lost this game, despite making numerous mistakes and some players not showing up, we should have won.

It's always close to impossible to beat a team twice in a season. So I very much think Texas will make an example of ou when we meet again in the CCG.

Jaylan Ford was mia, about as ineffective as I've seen him be. GBenda played well though.

I thought missing on 4 downs at the goal was partially because we kept running the ball. Not one attempted pass in that series.

Ewers did not have the game I thought he would. ou played tight coverage but there were seams to exploit, that we didn't.

We need better safety play. Busted coverages several times today, including the game-winner.

Sark lost the war with Venables today. But I do think Sark will own him next time.

I agree

glad to see someone has finally seen what I have in Ford all season, he looks out of position at MLB, last year he was in on every play , this year I see him trailing, he had a great shot at filling the hole to stop Gabriel and he did a shimmy and shake and left JF picking up his jockstrap... we are not a good tackling team and we got exposed in pass coverage, on the last drive there was lots of finger pointing especially the last play. lots of blown assignments
Coach K's defense looks like it did last year , getting gouged for big chunks of yardage

So ou's D is credited with playing a great game and our D, not so much. And yet, we outgained ou, QE was dicing them up badly through the air, and Brooks went for over 100 again. Just an observation. In the end, it was a few critical mistakes that cost us, and not the overall play.

It was Gbenda who blew coverage on that final play. IT guys broke it down and Rod Babers noted how Derek Williams adjusted the coverage when the man went in motion and it seems like Gbenda didn't respond at all. That is why Thompson was out there alone with two WRs.

General consensus here seems to be pretty level headed. We played a bad game today - give it a C, C minus, maybe a D. That said, we do a very simple things better and our chances to win go up big time.

We have lost our margin for error going forward but our next 6 are all very winnable and if we match up with OU again I still feel very good about our chances in a rematch. That game could be for a spot in the CFP.

A few observations regarding the Def today.

Nearly everyone was concerned about the lack of true pass rush talent going into the season but many including myself thought it had been overcome or at least minimized by scheme. Against the world’s greatest holding OL ( ou has always managed to hold without being called) our lack of a pass rush was exposed.

Additionally, Gabriel’s experience and ability to make quick reads further exposed the defense. His experience and knowledge of their system was a stark contrast to Milroe’s inexperience and inability to make quick reads. Gabriel is by far the best QB we have played this year. Likely that we will play until the playoffs.

Lastly, while we may have been more battle tested, their early season schedule allowed them to hide a little more and likely spend more time preparing for this game. The advantage of playing an exteeemly soft schedule early. I’ll be shocked if they make it the rest of the way without a loss.

All that said, they outperformed and out coaches us as a whole us today. My hope is that we get CJ, JT , and our OL healthy for the rest of the season and turn Hill loose off the edge or use him as the spy if we see them again.

HOOkEM!!

Gabriel in the run game was a very effective wrinkle for them. Some scrambles in there but also some designed runs. He had the most rushing attempts in a game today.

We will be ready for that if we meet them again.

We will learn a lot about this team by how they handle this defeat. If they can manage to bounce back with a win next week and continue winning, they will deserve to be in the Big 12 Championship game…and if we play BlowU again, we will win!

On a side note, Sark said pregame the team was handling things in a professional manner. That everyone was calm and prepared. I get that, it sounds good, nut this is a game of passion and aggression. They got smacked in the face early by a team that was foaming at the mouth. You can be professional but you can’t come out flat and emotionless. I thought they woke up and started playing with emotion and made a game of it, but I don’t think we were ready at the start of the game.

We should be able to beat BYE next week. haha

After that we travel to Houston and then have BYU at home. Should be two games that allow us to bounce back, focus on improving ourselves, get healthy before a big stretch run.

Rookie mistake on my part…but we still need to take care of business to get a shot at the Big 12 Championship…and I REALLY want Texas to take that trophy as a parting gift.

Texas is not quite as good as press clipings says they are. And ou defence is far better than most think they are.
Hind site more runs by Brooks might have pounded ou in to a loss. Quin had a good game take away the turn overs. Run Brooks till he needs a rest then send in Blue pound them into summision.

While practicing develop a play that will gain 1 yard majority of the time. If nothing else Red under center and a big push.
