Non-SEC Football

Even more pressure for Lincoln Riley. If he loses more this season, I think they part ways with him. Times are tough at SC. People are losing jobs while the athletic department is leading college football in money spent on players. Not a good look

As I have already stated in a different tread; USC can't pay Riley to go away. They aren't the aggies. That is a $85M payout to go away. They aren't telling anybody to hold their beer and watch this. Much like the FSU coach and his $70+M buyout not happening. Only the aggies are that stupid.

NCAA ruling on Michigan.

Seems like a bit more then a slap on the wrist, but nothing substantial enough to cause their program any substantial problems.

I like the show cause on Harbaugh and Strohs, assuming it implies they can't coach in college football for that duration, although who knows if that is what it meens, and if it can hold up if challenged.

Harbaugh isn't going leave the NFL until he is fired a has no further options.

You are smarter than that. If you have an issue with the origin of the school's name, take it up with the citizens of Midland and post it on the Politics Board. Not here. Thank you.
I am. And so are you. If the answer to my question is considered political, perhaps @Baron should have taken it to the politics board.

This rubs wrong.

Your question was indeed political. Otherwise, why would there be a question at all? I would wager you know why the school was named after REL, same as Tyler Robert E Lee and the town named Robert Lee. REL was one of America's best generals in war time. Because it was for the confederacy does not negate that point.

It would be wrong to attempt to make someone else address your political question with a thread he has no real interest in starting and on a board he's not interested in being on.

This needs to stay a politics-free space.

The original post was political...yet no one seems to have an issue with Baron criticizing "woke". It's a double standard.

Robert E Lee was a great general. He chose to fight for the confederate army and not the Union. He held racist ideologies, he wasn't just a benevolent slave owner.

And his name and image (among other confederate generals) was used in the 1950s and 60s, during the civil rights era, as a way to remind black people that they didn't belong in certain schools, cities, etc.

I agree, let's keep politics off the football boards. That rule needs to work both ways.

No, it was news of the day. It happened. And it was ridiculous that it ever had to change at all. It's only political when you inject the implication and association of a storied legend with evil.

If you look around you, as well as in your own family tree, you will likely find slave owners. I don't know what it would matter today because no one today (in the US) has ever been a slave nor has anyone ever owned one.

Before he served in the Confederate military, Lee was a key member of the US military. He is a US Army veteran.

This isn't the 1950s or 1960s, spans that no one except a small percentage of living people even remember today. It matters not what was done with his name, otherwise, people could destroy anyone they want by using their name, in the name of bad intentions or ill repute.

Robert Lee, Texas was named for Robert E. Lee because he and his US Army unit once camped there and other places in West Texas and the Panhandle.

It is a bad habit we have when we judge other people who lived in another time where things were quite different.

News of the day “midland legacy has been renamed midland Lee”

Political tilted post “bye bye wokeness”

People woke up to the use of confederate heroes as a way to fight against the civil rights movement. This was part of the “Massive Resistance” movement after brown v the board of education.

To call the original name change woke is politically charged and needs to stay off this board.

You have expressed your point several times. They are acknowledged. Let's move on or continue discussions on Politics Board. Thank you.

Beat the buckeyes! 🤘🏼

Within the story, there is a woke movement which caused the name change. It is part of the story. And the story is a headline all over Texas.

Brown was how many years ago? And what would that have to do with today? "Using" dead confederate heroes would be a task to come back and fight against a civil rights movement. I mean, seriously? How did statues combat civil rights? Wait, don't answer that.

If you're suggesting the "woke" comment was political, it is because the woke that caused the name change was itself political, and was the central part of the story. Referring to the central part of the story upset you?

Everyone in this state and especially everyone in burnt orange knows Midland Lee. We nabbed a pretty dandy RB from that school.

This will be my last post on the matter simply because this began as an effort to stop what is happening right here.

It is a politically charged term and especially in this context it carries a lot of political undertone. I don't care to have these types of discussions on this board but if someone brings it here I'll provide the counterpoint. I'll happily be done with this discussion.

Has anyone seen that the Big 10 has proposed a 28-team playoff?

I think it's absurd. We all know each year that teams are ranked 14-25 really aren't playoff caliber teams. We see this year after year after year.

Under the Big 10 plan, we could see a 7-6 Rutgers make the playoff.

At this point, why have a regular season at all? Just pre--pick the teams you want in the playoff and run a 14-game schedule.

The greed I'm seeing is just getting way out of hand. Hopefully, the SEC remains sane in this decision.

Give me the 12 team format and call it a day.

I agree. First thought I had was why even have conferences. Just start playoffs based on preseason media polls [sarcasm] and forget decades long rivalries and pageantry. The reason why college football is popular and preferred over NFL. Personally, I don't want college football to become a Jerry Jones business model.
